I've got 1x-4x "Platinum" (only markings) silver-bottom DVD-R. I bought them for 50 cents each on clearance at a computer store.

I figured, "hey why not?" when buying, but got home to a big mystery.

Anybody out there seen these? Have a clue?

Burning tests right now, so no results to report yet.

That's not even the worst one!

Yeah, I test new stuff. I guessed it would be junk going in, but it was a gamble. Somebody has to test.

  8. Ritek, Taiyo Yuden and Prodisc have silver bottom CD-Rs -

    Maybe this just the beginning

I can see bottlegers grabbing these up to try to pass them off as being pressed media when they sell their pirated copies on Ebay

  9. Hey, I bought some of those too, in the +version. I asked the sales guy what brand they were and the brand was some guy's name, Bob Ross or something like that, I can't remember. They burn ok as long as you don't exceed 2 GB.
If it works, don't fix it.

Bob Ross is the name of that painter guy on PBS that has the slow calm voice and big frizzy hair that shows people how to paint.

I use to watch him everyday after comming home from high school ... wasn't much on at that time of the day hehehe

He use to paint these really kewl mostly outdoor scenes that looked nice but then for "perspective" he would draw a big huge tree that would cover up like a third of the picture saying that it was closer than everything else hehehe

  11. I think I have the same ones, bought them today - not a clue as to what make they are, but cheap. The proprieter's Taiwanese and his english breaks down a bit when you ask him technical questions like "What brand are these?" - he only answers "60 cents each" but what I'd got from him so far was pretty good. These are dodgy though. I'm trying to decide if it's the media, as I thought it was Nero, but it also failed with DVDFab. Decrypter is next, if that's no good, I guess the search is on for new media.

Lordsmurf, which app was that? Is it the same as DVDInfoPro?

    Nero CD-DVD Speed.

These discs will be used for 1-2 GB one-offs.
Or I may play frisbie with them.

In any case, I'll get $10 out, whether it's in anger or usage.

  13. thanx! btw, i found out what brand I have, did a google, found one reference that said they were crappy - I've forgotten the brand name, will post when I get home.

From now on, I think I will have to be little less ready to find bargoons...

  15. I bought these disks too and am having all sorts of problems. I'll never buy them again. I do have a question though. I have a LG4040B dvd burner and use Nero 6.0 to burn. When I put these platinum 1x-4x dvd's in and try to burn somehing with Nero it only gives me the option to burn at 2X. is this just because these are cheap a$$ disks? my other disks seem to all burn at 4X. Thanks for any replys!
