  1. I am looking for a current model DVD player that is finicky about the playback of DVD-R discs.....(it plays some but not others).... I want this to test the quality /compatibility of DVD-R dics.
Can anyone make any recommendations? Thanx. Have a nice day or evening!

  2. My Mintek Portable 5" (Model: MDP-5860) is a little finicky. I have limited myself to more reputable DVD Blanks brands so haven't had a problem lately, but this unit will not play every DVD I put in it that I have rented (but will play most)

It was my experience that the cheaper the brand the more media it played (my Apex plays every ridiculous thing i cram in its slot)

My friend's higher end sony only plays higher quality burns, my panasonic mid-price plays somewhere inbetween.

my logic is not scientific however.

Overall, older Toshiba and Philips are strick on dvd authoring. The Toshiba have pretty poor media support. My Philips FW5 won't play anything authored by Reel DVD or DVD Shrink (older betas). Doesn't like Princo.

The Toshiba won't play light colored dye media.

My Panasonic s35 plays most high-mid quality media. But doesn't care too much for RW media.

I'd check the pawn shops and get an older major brand DVD player. The cheap ones (Apex) sometimes use computer DVD-ROM units, so they tend to anything. Look for something made in 200 or older.

Before you actually buy the player check the model in the compatibility list. I have an older Sony player that won't play VCD/SVCD, but it plays recordable DVDs far better than my cheap GE player that can handle everything else.

  6. I have an OLD RCA that will barely play anything. Only reason I keep it around is to verify that it will play on there. If it plays on the old RCA, it will play anywhere

I've got a Toshiba SD-3109 and I have yet to have any disc except commercial DVD's that would play on it. A lot of the older Toshiba's seem to be that way.

  8. Probably to expensive for just a test Dvd player, but I have a Sony Davs888 cinema system, which is undoubtedly female....very fussy, though likes Verbatim

  9. I have found that the more the player costs, the more finicky it is. Seems it should be the other way around. But, that's good for us isn't it?

I think the same applies to wine, the worse it tastes the more it costs.
If it works, don't fix it.

My Hitachi-DVP415 frequently chokes on my home-burned DVDs. The same discs play fine in my APEX-1225. In fact, the Apex has never given me trouble with any DVD I've thrown at it.
