You could find it much cheaper pretty much anywhere else. But I wouldn't even recommend that.

You should get the Pioneer DVR-310S. From the looks of it, its just as cheap or cheaper and better.

To answer you first question, no. I saw the same model at Costco today for a little over $200 after rebate. For that much, you could get the membership, and get their return policy (any time if it fails). Then you can do the region-free hack yourself very easily with instructions from this website: LiteOn LVW-5001.

Or, you could spend the $300 on a unit....
