I'm purchasing a HD DirecTIVO in about a month or so when they're out and will love being able to time shift but my main interest is archiving. At times I thought about buying a D-VHS but as well I could only get prerecorded content since I have no firewire output on my current HDTV STB as well as the TIVO box that I'll be getting.
I know one option is the 169time system. The only thing I don't like is that I would have to get a separate box that is modified with firewire. The extra cost bothers me but the main problem is then I'd have to be home when I record and often this isn't the case, the reason I like recording from a HD TIVO. Is there a mod that can be made to the HDTIVO to give it firewire out?
What about firebus? I read a lot about it on here but still can't figure out quite what it is. Would it allow me to record HDTV?
As well, what about these HDTV type cards for PC's? Is there one I should look into to record HDTV. I know there is so much going on with HDCP that may make these not work in the future or make it impossible to buy these devices in the future.
As well, I have read about other solutions on here such as a japanese program that can record HDTV without buying any of these captures cards. What is the best solution to look into?
What I'm interested is being able to take video off of my HD TIVO and put it onto some type of recordable media. I want it where I can take it into my computer (if necessary) and then output it to some type of media since I wouldnt' be watching off on my computer monitor. If this means buying a D-VHS to record off of my computer I'd be interested. As well, is it possible to take video onto some type of mpeg-4 (divx, wmv9, whatever) type DVD and then play it on a dvd player. I have heard Samsung as well as others are coming out with dvd players that will support dvd and wmv9 but I'm not sure if they will output in HDTV resolution. I'd prefer to be able to take off of DVI to my computer, if not component.
wanted to add I"m also concerned with what problems the broadcast flag will do.
I'd love to be able to record direct from my HD TIVO to a D-VHS and prefer some type of DVD but I also know that's not out yet I was going to wait for HD-DVD but it seems it may take a long time for standards to work out and I"m better off getting a D-VHS for now for 2-3 years before I upgrade. I'm hoping at that time I can copy any D-VHS I have to HD-DVD but maybe I'm wrong about that. Will it be possible to do this?
I just want some type of setup where I can take video from my HD TIVO to the computer, then record onto some type of HD-DVD or D-VHS for use on my HDTV.

While doing some research I came across this link:

It seems that if you took the MyHD card and added the optional DVI daughterboard that you could simply take DVI outputed from any STB and then output via firewire to a D-VHS. Of course I would imagine things like HDCP and copy protection flags might be a problem. This is the only pci card that I saw though that offers firewire output (of course I guess you could use the computers firewire ports for input/output) as well as dvi input most of all. Is this all too good to be true?
