  1. Hi, I have an external hadr drive, an MDT 80 Gb which is connected to my PC using a USB to IDE adaptor. All of a sudden it will not allow me to copy large files to it like programs or large video files. I have just noticed that the jumper seems to have gone astray from the back of the disc. I know this sounds silly but is this the problem?

What happens when i try to move anything to this drive is I get a delayed write error message from XP and the drive vanishes from my computer until I unplug the adapter and reconect and it seems to reset itself, it still wont work though even after that.

    Cheers in advance, AW

Don't know specifically without more information but I can say that the jumper CAN cause problems on some of the externals. I have a USB to IDE external case that requires the drive to be set as MASTER, not slave. I haven't tried setting it to slave to see if it duplicates your problem but the manual is very specific that it must be set to master.

It sounds like the OS is sending out "response request" to the drive and not getting back a response, or an improper response. Here's a link to some forum posts on MTD drives. Not very encouraging.
