I've got several avi files that play fine in Quicktime or VLC, but whenever I convert them to VCD, SVCD or DVD using ffmpegX, I get badly out of sync audio, how can this be fixed, or how should I adjust my settings to get better sync?

I faced a similar problem several times, and the only way i found to solve it was:
-- reencode the the avi with "fast divX" preset (it's very fast) at same resolution and a big bitrate, not loosing too much quality.
-- transcode the reencoded divX to SVCD/DVD.
Not very elegant, but it always solved the sync issue for me...

AHA!!!!!!!
Now this makes sense to me, because THAT encoding, gives me a wealth of info I never had before, but do you know exactly what this means:
Stream #0.0: Video: msmpeg4, 320x240, 29.75 fps, 800 kb/s
Stream #0.1: Audio: mp3, 44100 Hz, stereo, 111 kb/s
the msmpeg4 is new to me, what codec is this? These are TV captures I'm working with that a PC buddy gave me, and he's....shall we say, thick, can't tell me anything about his processes....
You're right the fast divx moves pretty good, too. Even on my creakingly ancient G4 350.......wait til I get the G5!!!
