  1. I was wondering which program would be give the best quality for transcoding a DVD-9 to DVD-5. I heard that Intervideo DVD Copy 2 gives the best quality and is a bit better than dvd shrink. I don't care about time, just as long as it produces the best quality. What's the time difference of transocing between dvd shrink and dvd copy.

Final question: what's the difference between transcoding a dvd and reconverting the dvd?

It is pretty much a consensus that Instant Copy 7/8 gives overall best quality picture. Try it.

You must be talking about re-encoding (reconverting)?

Re-encoding differs from transcoding quite a bit. Transcoding is more like taking information out from the original feed and thus turning it smaller. When re-encoding, the encoder goes through all the frames of the feed and encodes from that information a wholly new feed. It calculates where the bitrate is needed most. CCE is an encoder and IMHO a top notch one if I may add.

I can almost quarantee you that encoding is the way to go, if you need to compress the movie more than 20% from the original.
And CCE is the right tool for the job [/quote]

Whose consensus? Don't get me wrong IC8 is a great program, but I've gotten some pretty bad results from it, its not better or worse the bulk of the transcoders out there.

    To vdk_au:

Ok there are ALOT of programs for transcoding. It really depends on what you want to do. If you want to fit the entire disc down to one disc then either go for IC8 or Maybe use the trial on that Intervideo DVDCopy and see how it looks.

If however you just want movie files without menus and stuff check out DVDshrink first because, well its free and easy to get.

If you just want movies and a menu and want to dump the extras I THINK CloneDVD might have that feature.

However if you want the entire disc and decide transcoding may not be right for ya either look into DVD2DVDr, DVD2SVCD (with DVD2DVD mode enabled) OR check out the new DVD Rebuilder that is in early beta right now but looking quite sweet.

I know its alot of info, but just play around, buy some DVD RWs to test with and find whats right for ya.
