LOL (something i never type, but feel the need to do so now)

    New to the 'net? =)

Stands for "Laughing Out Loud". (also considered by many, myself included, to be AOL-Speak (something an America Online user would say))

  3. LOL is "Linear Output Line", it's a device to connect your computer to your TV using high quality digitized quaxtar signals. There's two variations of the LOL signal. LMAO and LMAOROTF.

LMAO is an older format, LuniMation Auxillary Output, developed for older systems and 2-headed VCRs. If you've bought your computer in the last two years, odds are you're using LMAOROTF. That stands for LuniMation Auxillary Output - Random Output Tileximy Frequency. Because this cable is more durable, people often will use the cables so much that they will lose their rounded shape, so sometimes to make them circular again, you have to roll them back and forth on the floor. That's how they got their nicklame "ROTF" or "Rolling on the Floor".

    Any other questions?

    LOL!
LOL maybe "AOLer" territory to some... but to those who dont have their head up their ass, it is more acceptable. LOL just means - Laughs/Laughing Out Loud - in other words: "hey... I am laughing." It saves you typing in sentances like: "I found that very funny and laughed... out loud".
Perhaps I should make fun of people for using windoze if others see LOL as lamer talk .
    LOL!

    mikewg,
    LOL.

actually LOL, ROTFLMAO, etc originated more from irc chat then an aolism. An appropriate aolism would be "HIKGD" or help I keep getting dropped. LOL

though has anyone noticed that many aolers won't give up their aol and even some will get broadband but then spend money to use the bring your own provider or whatever that thing is called.

just as smilies came from irc chat.

    check out:
    http://andziadalnet.republika.pl/IRC%20skroty.htm

for some other abbreviations from irc.

oh for those that aren't familiar with irc, it stands for internet relay chat, you know the way that people chatted before AIM, ICQ, and etc. LOL.

Of course if you want to look even further back, check out the almost extinct BBS, Bulletin Board Service, which was used before the internet became a huge success. Of course you'll have to have a modem to actually dial-in to a bbs.
also many bbs services offered forums from a network such as fidonet, so you could communicate across the country with other bbsers that talked on the same network. They also had games, downloads, and etc.
I'm told that some bbs services survive by providing a portal from the internet and offer their users a pseudo-internet access. Many of the irc acronyms derived from the bbs and then continued to evolve from there.

    have a great day,
    TW

oh did I mention also that most bbs services are free and many were run by people that you could actually meet and get to know in person. Some would have get togethers and you actually get to know the person behind the alias, though the humor is that many times even after meeting the person you still called them by their alias. Its a geek thing okay. LOL.

Bravo. I had thought about mentioning the IRC/BBS origins, but couldnt be assed (LOL). It is true that terms such as LOL have been hijacked by AOLers, I am glad someone mentioned it.
    IRC is "l337". LMAO

  14. This forum would be better if people would RTFM before asking questions or more appropriate to this site RT H-T to the left. Actually, AFAIK the cute little graphics, the so-called "smiley" is more accurately called an Emoticon, since there are others that express emotion besides happiness. You can find a whole bunch defined as well as common Internet acronyms at the below site:
    GTP, BBL.
