  1. Hi everybody, i have a question for you:
I just upgraded my PIII-800mHz to a P4-1.3gHz and when encoding to VCD & SVCD it is only 10% faster than my last PIII, i use Premiere 5.1, Link to Avisynth, and TMPGEnc12h.
Is it normal or the P4 is just a lie (not too powerful).

It uses 20 minutes encoding for 4 minutes of video (on SVCD)!

    Thanks for the answers!
Thank you very much for the answers.

Well, and where can i get a dual processor system because here in Toluca there isn't any in the stores, and can you tell me what brand is the best? (intel, generic?)

  2. Just because u almost double your CPU speed from 800MHz to 1300MHz that does not translate to a significant improvement in your encoding speed, eventhough it should improved the performance somewhat like what u have noticed (a 10%).

A better option would have been to upgraded to a Dual Processors system. This of course depends on the application u are using. Some applications do not take advantage of parallel processing. Fortunately, TMPGEnc does take advantage of 2 CPUs thus u might have seen a higher improvement with your AVI to Mpeg1/Mpeg2 encoding.

I have a dual 800MHz system and my encoding time for an AVI file to SVCD(normal quality) Mpeg2 using Premiere 6.0 with Avisynth frameserve and encode with TMPGEnc is about 2.5 to 1 (2.5mins for 1min of video).

PS: u must have NT or Win2K (not WINME) to support dual CPUs

Hope I didn't make u feel down about your new P4 system. U can play around with TMPGEnc MPEG2 quality setting and reduce it a little, but still has good quality to see if the speed is what u want.

  3. I have an Athlon 1.3, and it does the same encoding, for example, a 4:27 live music video, converted to svcd (high quality) takes about 18minutes and 40 some seconds. i'm running WinME w/tmpgenc h using a DV video.
if i'm not mistaken, the Pentiums lately have not been increasing very much in speed. Except the jump from 1.4 to 1.7. i might be wrong, but hey, what you got is still good
(don't quote me on any pentium info, check zdnet.com)

  4. Just a fun experiment for those interested in results between a single P3 700MHz vs. a dual P3 700MHz encoding time:

    AVI Clip: 5min16sec (9500 frames)

    Encoder: TMPGEnc beta12
    Template: Sefy's SxVCD for NTSC Enhanced (Mpeg2 352x240 CQ_VBR_100)

    Total encoding time with:

    One P3 700MHz CPU = 17min30sec or ~9.048fps (9500frames/1050sec)
    Two P3 700MHz CPUs = 11min15sec or ~ 14.074fps (9500frames/675sec)

Compared 9fps to 14fps is about a %50 performance increase.

The same AVI clip (5min16sec) took about 4min20sec. The output format is 720x480 Mpeg2 CBR@6Mbps DVD Program stream using CCE_SP2.5 on my Dual P3 700MHz.
