I have a Pioneer 105 DVD rewriter and I have had nothing but success with it from day one. I use DVD Shrink, DVD Decryptor and Nero 6 to back up DVDs and I have done 100s. Last night it started to refuse to read DVDs. It seems to be trying to read the disc as there is a a slight noise from the drive but everything hangs up, If I try to read a DVD using Explorer it goes on forever and then Explorer crashes when I open the drive. Strangely it still reads CDs with no problem. It plays Audio CDs perfectly. Is this a software problem or has my drive suffered a hardware failure? Device manager reckons it is working properly.

  3. Some more info about your system? Platform, IDE configuration, motherboard make, etc.

Can your drive read pressed DVD-ROMs or DVD-Videos?

I only use Ritek G-04. It won't play copied or commercial disks but plays anything on Cd-R.

If it is not reading commercial DVD's then your units laser is probably gone. I had to replace my 105 as well but mine wouldn't read any disc ( CD or DVD)

If its still under warrenty your in luck. If not.............it may be cheaper or more cost efffective to buy the new 107.

Probably a dirty laser. I have, to date, cleaned the lenses on 6
pioneer 105,s. This brought them all back to life and returned full
    functionality.
The fact that cd,s still work means absolutely nothing.
It uses a seperate laser for cd.
Denatured alcohol, a q-tip and twenty minutes and your back in business.
If you are a smoker or live in a smokey environment, than a dirty laser
    is pretty much a certainty.
I, stupidly, am a smoker and need to clean my 105 about every 6 to 8
months. The cooling fan in the power supply draws air in from the front
and through the burner, slowly leaving a layer of debris on the laser.
    Ergo the problem.
If I see this problem posted one more time, I will be tempted to put together a guide with photos. "How to clean your pioneer 105" LOL
It irks me to have people spend money needlessly.

Hope this was of some help

    Sounds like dirty laser lens.

Do not use a "cleaner" device for best results.
Take apart, and swab lens with IPA (rubbing alcoholo, IsoPropyl Acolho) and q-tip
