  1. I have recently purchased a Sanyo Xacto digital camcorder which records the movie as 640 x 480 30 fps MPEG4 format.

I can easily transfer the resulting files to my pc and play them smoothly in the Quicktime player.

Now I want to edit these clips into a sequence and export them as a final video.

The problems that I am experiencing are that none of my video editing programs recognise the MP4 file extensions and will not accept them into the programs AND when ive tried converting the MP4 files with Virtual Dub, EO Video and PVAstrumento none of these programs see the MPEG4 files as a valid file to convert.

I am at a brick wall now and do not know what else to do - I hope someone else on here can point me in the right direction!

    THANKS

I was able to open mp4 files with Virtualdub, but it takes a bit of doing. Here's what I suggest:

    1. Install the TMPGEnc Mov Plugin and VFAPI Reader.

    2. Open your mp4 with TMPGEnc. You'll probably have to change the "files of type" slider to "all files".

    3. If TMPGEnc successfuly opened the mp4, load the template that matches your desired output. DVD I presume.

    4. Save your project.

    5. Open VFAPI Reader and click "add job". Change the slider so it accepts TMPGEnc project files and add your .tpr file that you already saved, then click "convert".

5 Try opening the VFAPI avi file with Vdub.

I can't guarantee it will work for you as it did for me, but it might be worth a shot. Good luck.

I know its a bit long winded but if its the only way to get editable MPEG4 movie files its the route ill have to take!
