  1. OK, Here is a question. What is the best software to convert DVD segments to. The use of these files will to remain on a computer and be played through either a player or a presentation software that supports mpeg/avi/mov format.

I have tried converting a 288mb vob file and keep getting skimpy 84mb files that look horrible when presented on a 10 foot by 14 foot screen. I need highest possible quality. I don't care how big each file is in the end. I need as close as to DVD quality as possible. 1:1 conversions would be great if in AVI/MPEG format so that the presentation software can deal with it.

BTW I have no problem with ripping them off disk. I can Isolate these files with ease. I burn DVDr's and VCD/SVCD with no problems. So I am really not new to media converting, but I just have never tryed doing this high quality stuff before.

  2. Best quaility is to not convert at all. There are a few ways you can do that but basically you'd just leave the source MPEG2 video alone. Either as VOB files are demux to m2v/ac3 (can convert ac3 to mp2 and remux as mpeg2 file if necessary). The files will be large but there is no quality lost.

MPEG2 is not a format that was meant to be edited, it's used as the final format after all editing has already been done. Even clipping/cropping MPEG2 video is a pain. If necessary best to use a program to generate a new VOB series (eg. DVD Shrink in re-author mode set to zero compression, or IFOEdit).

Vejita-sama is right -- don't convert them at all ..

best quality you can get - is the original

  4. Oh Duh!... Hehe Thanx. I used DVDShrink to pull the VOB file out and then just open it up with Windows Media Player. Too Easy. Thanx!
