  1. Hi,

I never did a VCD before, and now I have to put together a VCD with menus. So I downloaded VCDComposer. The thing is I don't know the difference between segment - sequence - selection and playlist. Any explanation would help.
    Thanks

Basically i will have a menu screen with 6-7 choices.

    Hi,

Well, I'll try to sort the things out here. Most of it is covered in the manual for GNU VCDImager so I'll mainly cut'n'paste from there, and then put in how VCDComposer works...

Sequence items are motion mpeg-clips according to the specs of the VCD-type You're creating. These can have optionally up to 2 channel audio-stream multiplexed in them.

Segment items can be as above, but can also be mpeg-stills (with or without audio) and audio-only mpegs.

Selections are what You usually make menus from, and playlist is where You'd usually put the actual movie(s).

So in order to create the type of VCD You'd like, there are a couple of steps to take:

    1) Get the mpeg for the menu (no option to create this in VCDComposer *yet*), and add it as a segment item (if suitable)

    2) Add the actual mpeg movies as sequences (i.e. the content of the choices)

    3) Add a selection and set the Playitem of it to be the menu mpeg

    4) Create playlists from the movies (i.e. one playlist for each mpeg movie; cretae the playlist and ad the wanted clip(s) as playitem)

    5) In the selection, add the created playlists as "Selections".

You can then also set the previous, next, etc. for each playlist to jump to reasonable playlists or back to the selection. And in the selection You can set the default, return, timeout, previous, etc. to jump to whatever You want. You would probably also want to set the loop to "infinite"...

[I have probably forgotten a thing or two here I'm at work and in a bit of a hurry so...]

Please post again if anything is unclear!

    /Rico

  3. I wrote an explanation on how the XML system is used in VCDImager here: http://www.geocities.com/medinotes/vcd/general_xml_structure.html
