  1. Does anyone know any free software that I can use to scan in all the DVD's I've written and let me perform tasks like searching files of a type, sorting by size, etc... I've tried to do some searches, but the only software I find are either for mp3 files only or I have to pay before I even download. I have half of a large flip file filled with DVD's I've made of all kinds of things that are quickly getting out of hand, and if I can do a search in the catalog, find what disc a file is on then put it in, I'd be really happy. Thanks in advance.

  3. I use Advanced Disc Catalog - works with MP3s too. You might wanna give it a try, I find it very useful.

  4. I said in my original post that I have been searching for disc cataloging software but it all seems to end up at shareware. I just want a solid piece of freeware that will let me browse through files in a tree view, or search for a file by keyword, or display files of a certain type.

edit: I would make this program and distribute it freeware but I don't have a complete knowledge of Windows programming. maybe one day...

  5. make a spreadsheet in MSExcel. It's free, no shareware, and you can make it do whatever you want

  6. I have many files, and it would make transferring all the names of files to a spreadsheet extremely monotonous. I did try freestyler's suggestion and it's just what I'm looking for, but shareware. I'll try it out more and perhaps register it if it works as nice as it has so far.

Excel is a waste of time for logging large amounts of data, a lackluster attempt at creating a pseudo-database.

The only thing I'd consider making in it is a grocery list, if that.

Since when is MS Excel free?

  8. I once had to export about 10 Excel spreadsheets on a Pentium (166MHz) with Windows 95 into a MySQL database in linux. Sounds easy you say? Not when half of them were several hundred megabytes, and the only common format is comma-delimited fields. I couldn't even import an entire database at once, I had to use `head' and `tail' to break up the file into several pieces.

I'd say the only benefit it has over databases is that you can make forms and such, plus it's easy for regular joes to change data easily than to figure out SQL commands.

I just saw a program over at Shell Extension City, freeware, that would convert a directory into an HTML file - if that sounds like it could help you, let me know and I'll go dig it up..

Didn't one of the members here offer a free utility he had written to do just this, within the last 2 months?

I think some tried it and found it to be quite helpful.

Don't know what to search for, maybe someone else does.

I'll give it a try, but don't hold your breath.

    Cheers,

    George
