  2. it depends.....

you didn't specify what type of bitrate or dvd specs you are using.

are you converting to CBR, CQ, or VBR?.....704X480, 352X480, 352X240, or PAL specs?

  3. sorry about that Im new to this but I know im converting to Pal 16:9
Just want to know if its common for it to take so long rather than me being stupid and not ticking something in the settings

  4. well...that's not much added information

but if I had to guess, I'd guess you were using a template thru the wizard, which would mean you'd be going from vcd resolution to dvd resolution....

and judging by the time it's taking on an amd 1500, perhaps you're even using VBR...

and if so, then the time it's taking you isn't too bad

I have a P4 2.4Ghz, and if I use 2-pass VBR an hour of video will take nearly 2 hours to convert. If I use CBR it takes less then 50 minutes. CQ just slightly longer.

and I'm assuming if you have a vcd you're converting, it's around an hour long...you said how long the conversion took but didn't supply the duration of the source video.

you'll find that you'll get more helpful and specific answers here if you supply more specific information

Converting a VCD to DVD using TMPGEnc is pointless. VCD video is compliant for DVD, re-encoding only makes it look worse and wastes your time. Look up a VCD to DVD guide or try this one.

    pointless huh.....

so I guess there is never ever an issue about ntsc>pal conversion....pointless to consider it

....and there is never ever an issue about GOP headers with various dvd authoring programs.....pontless to think about

....and vcd video always has perfect contrast, brighness, color saturation, edge sharpening and of course can never ever have it's appearence improved by filtering.....pointless to even try

...at least it's pointless in a zippy world

in the real world, another pointless action is a person speaking in absolute terms about the subjective nature of video, and whether or not someone else is "wasting" time trying things different in that subjective arena.

Unless you are "correcting" (*) the video, re-encoding a VCD to make a DVD is pointless.

    * Correcting includes changing framerate, GOP headers, colour, contrast, brightness, saturation, edge sharpening, filtering etc.

The chances that the original poster is actually trying to do any of the above is pretty slim.

    point accepted

however....the re-encoding necessary for some of those 'fixes' isn't pointless

and as long as we're all be technically accurate : changing audio from 44Ghz to 48Ghz is technically "vcd conversion to dvd"....so you're technically wrong.

I believe you might mean mpg1>mpg2 conversion as being the 'pointless' endeavour

aha!!.....you are both zippy and slippery.....

I agree that the original poster most likely had no intention of doing these things.

I would point out that both you and johnsO used the term "vcd conversion to dvd " which would technically be defined by simply resampling the audio from 44Ghz to 48Ghz.

that's splitting semantical hairs to be sure, however it did allow me to lob a couple of snide bombs your direction.....it was a slow morning...

While we're splitting hairs, how about resampling the audio from 44KHz to 48 KHz ?

GHz is slightly too high for DVD
    If in doubt, Google it.

Just a minor skirmish, not like in some of the other threads. Keep at it and welcome to the forum.
