My question is about duplicating dvds.
I make dvd sets from my own videos. for the most part they will play but sometimes a customers cannot get a disc to play properly.
when they do, it is not always the same disc which leads me to beleive that it might be a handleing problem some where. I replace the disc and it works fine.
I am trying to minimize this occourance. I make the discs on a duplicator. I use an offbrand but seemingly relible disc. they burn at 2x becuase i foun that some players will only play up to 2x.
here is what I know:
I know it cant be the disc type for the player becuase others work and some don't. both using the same disc. sometimes they send them back and they work just fine in my player, no problems whatso ever.
the problems are really varied. from the sound getting out of sync to skipping in random place,
for the most part there are no fingerprints, scuffs or prininting on the back.
please help as I would like to not have as many problems with this. I don't mind once in a while but sometimes it seems like every order needs one or two replaced

Although you already said you don't think it is your media....that's what your problem sounds like.
What kind do you use?
I sell my video work on RitekG04 DVD-R discs, I burn them all at 4x and I've never had one that wouldn't play correctly for a customer. (knock on wood) I've sold about 750 discs and have sent them all over the country. -
the latest ones I have had are accu's. before they were HQs
I never though a name brand mattered that much.
I got the cheapest ones or cheaper then name brand
but I still don't understand why they would work in my player and not theres
another question is where does one get a large order of disc. more then 500 at a time and get them cheaper.
I have ordered from meritline in CA with moderate success. discs I have been getting are about 70-73 cent apiece. they have the g04s you mentioned for 89 cent a peice -
I buy my media from shop4tech. Now some people report having problems with them sending them the wrong stuff or whatever...I have not experienced that in my dealings with them. But I always add that disclaimer when I tell people where I get my media from.
Another guy on here swears by the Fuji discs, but he says only get the ones made in japan....not the ones made in Taiwan.
The reason that they may work in yours but not theirs is their player may have a different tolerance than yours does. For example, if you browse this forum you will see 100's of posts about people having discs that will play in their computer but won't play in their stand alone. Computer DVD drives are more forgiving, basically meaning that the manufacturers of DVD drives need the drive to be able to read a wide variety of DVD media, from Data discs to Movie discs and also RW discs. Where as a standalone only needs to be able to read DVD movie discs. You would be better off talking to someone else about the specifics of "WHY"...I'm in a serious gray area there but I believe it's probably something along those lines.
I had this issue way back when I first bought my burner. What did I know, I was a Royal Newbie in the DVD world...but when I bought my burner I also bought a 5 pack of memorex DVD-R at the store. When I made my first DVD video, I burned it on the Memorex disc...it played great in the computer. But I didn't even have a standalone player yet, so I took the disc to best buy and just starting putting it in different players. It worked in most but not all. So I was reading and reading on this site and someone told me to buy Authentic Ritek media (bundled by Ritek)...I did, I re-burned the video, went back to best buy and tried all the DVD players again and it worked in all of them. I've not used a different media since. Like I said, I've sold better than 750 of them and zero returns.
I'm not an expert, just telling you my experiences with it.
As far as the 500...at shop4tech.
qty. price per unit
25 $26.25 [$1.05]
50 $43.50 [$0.87]
100 $85.00 [$0.85]
300 $252.00 [$0.84]
1000 $830.00 [$0.83]
If you go there in the search box paste this:
"DVD-R 1X to 4X 4.7GB (Authentic Ritek Media) Bulk by Ritek"
These are the RitekG04 discs. -
thanks for the tip.
i just ordered about a 100 discs for a small order but I think the next big order will be these.
I would like a zero failure rate.
I was unable to find the printable ones at that price. that is about the same price as meritline. meritline owns quite a few virtual stores so maybe it is the same company.
anyhow. do you print on the discs as well. the ones I have now have a good matte finish on them and they dry quick.
the cost of the disc versus disc replacement and postage will be balanced if I dont have any failure rates on them -
I don't paint or label the disc so to speak. I stencil the name of the video and I write it with a sharpie.
