  1. Very intersting.

Any idea on the quality loss? I'm sure it would vary from system to system. But since it's doing hardware conversion it would be on-the-fly fast I'm guessing.

I have not noticed any quality difference (on my crap tv )

Some DVD players do excellent PAL to NTSC while other DVD players are only So-So.

Now a days it seems that most DVD players that do PAL to NTSC conversion do a decent job.

The nice thing about PAL is that the image quality tends to be a bit better than NTSC so the downconversion doesn't really loose too much quality per NTSC spec.

However if you had a true multi-system TV (one that could display both NTSC and PAL without conversion) that would give you the best quality of both formats and the native PAL would look much better than having to convert it to NTSC.

But here in the USA such multi-system televisions are SO expensive that it just seems silly to go that route. I've thought about it myself but just can't seem to save up the money for it. For instance I not too long ago bought a 27" Toshiba for something like $279 at BEST BUY ... if I bought a 27" multi-system TV it would have been around $500 or more plus the only way for me to get one is to mail order it and you know how much it costs to ship a 27" TV? Way too much

So trust me the DVD players that do PAL to NTSC do a good enough job!

    P.S.
You can sometimes get BETTER end results if you convert from PAL to NTSC on the computer and burn a NTSC DVD-R and I have done that with many ... though not all ... of my PAL DVD discs.
