  1. I'm trying to conver my VCDs to DVD, but I am having problem playing back DVD on my SONY NS715P. I always get "CANNOT Play Disc" error msg.

Here is the method I use.

    1. The VCD format is in .MPG format, and I believe it's PAL.
    2. I use
http://www.dvd-guides.com/guides.php?category=othertodvd&name=vcdtodvd Guide to merge all MPGs together.
    3. Then I use http://www.dvd-guides.com/guides.php?category=dvdauthor&name=tmpegencdvdauthor Guide to author the DVDs.
    4. Then I burn all VOBs files using nero 6.3.0.3 DVD Video format on the DVD+RW.

The DVD+RW played fine on my SONy NS715P, and the DVD+RW has no compatiblity issue it, because I tested it with different image file.
So, I guess there must be something wrong that I did here.

Anyone that has solutions for this, please help!

    Thank you for your time.

a DVD has to use MPEG-2 not MPEG-1.
after joing the MPEG-1 files together, convert the MPEG-1 to MPEG-2 using TMPGEnc Plus...Then load them into TMPGEnc DVD Author and away you go. Hope this helps

  3. I see!

That is going to take really long time to convert. Is there a quicker way to bypass this MPEG1 TO MPEG2 DVD compatible method?

Like a hardware that will do this, or software tricks?

you have to wait for TMPGEnc to do it's thing.
there is other software out there that is alot quicker though

Please realize that this SONY model is a NTSC DVD player so it will not play back a PAL format DVD even if it is a home made region free DVD

richdvd, dvd can be mpg1 also,no need to convert to mpg2 but the pal vcd needs to be converted to ntsc if the player will not play pal.My apex 1500 will play pal but it doesnt play anamorphic properly, stretches it out to full screen.

Just dump the files into Nero Vision Express and see how it goes. You could even add AVI's to the mix and any VOB's (PAL or NTSC) you like, and set chapter stops. It will create a rather crude menu and it will convert any that are PAL to NTSC (or vice versa, it will ask). It is best to not do the final burn with NVE though, cuz for some reason the chapter stops can hang up on some standalones. Save the output to your HD and open it in Recode (where you can drop the created menu), then burn. For some reason, this way, the end result is more well behaved. The only problem is it appears that NVE can't handle Dolby 5.1 only Dolby 2 192 Kbps or LPCM 2 1536 Kbps. Although LPCM is a rather large hit it does sound better in most instances.

I've used the above methods to also burn Xvid AVI's to DVD's with added chapter stops with great results. Thrown a cute Dolby Digital logo VOB in the nose with a PAL Xvid AVI (set about 10 chapter stops) and ended up with an NTSC DVD that plays correctly in my JVC and Sampo.

NVE seems to get a bad rap, but for me it works well and quickly without having to use a lot of steps or different programs, but alas no Dolby 5.1.

  8. First of all, thank you for your replied with the good comments.

I think my SONY DVD Player plays PAL also, but I think it's because I didn't encode my VCD mpg format correctly. I basically took the mpeg1 format and merge it with TMPEGEnc, then convert the sound to 48000.
Of course it didn't work, my SONY player just tells me that "CANNOT PLAY DISC".

This time I merge the MPGs to DVD size, then converted to MPEG2 using TMPEGEnc Default DVD(NTSC) setting.

I will give it a try and see if it works.

    Thank you for your time,
