There is something very basic that I just don't understand about capturing/pass through. I have managed to connect my old Hi8 camcorder to my new Sony TRV 22. My TRV 22 is then connected to my computer with the fire wire cable. I have opened Movie Maker 2 and am ready to capture through the pass through feature of the TRV 22. When I click CAPTURE, Movie Maker 2 tells me there is no tape in my DV device. I don't understand why this is important, but I put a blank minidv tape in my TRV 22 anyway. Now, when I click CAPTURE, it captures less than a second of video & then stops automatically. As I said, there is something very basic that I am just not understanding ... can someone please help me? Thank You!!

    Don't use Movie Maker 2

    Try DVIO

    It's freeware

    Capture as type 2 DV

Unfortunately, the problem is ME. I also tried to capture with ULead and I am having the same problem. I am convinced that Movie Maker 2 (and ULead) are trying to capture from the blank tape in my TRV 22. I just don't get it.

Well are you sure that model cam does pass-thru? Not all do ... inlcuding not all SONY cams.

If you cam does there should be something about it in the manual ... if you lost that you can find a PDF version on the SONY site.

The Sony TRV 22 definitely has pass through & I've followed the steps in the manual (page 173) up to the point where they turn you over to the capturing software. The video comes up in the preview window & looks great. When I click CAPTURE though, the playback of the video stops on the preview screen and on Sony LCD (not on my old Hi8 camcorder).

Maybe try recording on that blank tape what you are trying to capture and at the same time record onto your computer . Maybe the passthrough isn't activated until you are actually recording something.

If that doesn't work, record your source onto the tape and then transfer it to the computer later.

One of those suggestions should work.

That sounds reasonable ... but can you record with a digital camcorder while it is in VCR mode?
