The best DVD-R media is made my Taiyo Yuden. It is also the most expensive IF you buy it in a retail store.
However you can buy Taiyo Yuden direct from some on-line websites such as RIMA.COM
There are other websites but my internet searching has shown that RIMA.COM always seems to have the lowest prices for Taiyo Yuden DVD-R media.
The only "downside" is that to get this discount price you have to buy a minimum of 50 discs.
But this is the best price going for the best DVD-R media there is.
A 50 pack of Taiyo Yuden 4x DVD-R discs at RIMA.COM is only $80.00 plus shipping. Not counting the shipping (which is extra) that is only $1.60 per disc. Not too shabby considering the cheapest they are retail is approximately $2.49 per disc.
If you want to try retail then I suggest BEST BUY as they carry a 10-pack of FUJI DVD-R discs that say MADE IN JAPAN on the package. These are Taiyo Yuden 4x DVD-R discs. Taiyo Yuden does not sell to retail stores under their brand name but any FUJI DVD-R media that says MADE IN JAPAN is Taiyo Yuden. This 10-pack goes for $24.99 but every-so-often (unfortunately not often enough) it will be on sale for around $17.99
Beware FUJI DVD-R packs that say MADE IN TAIWAN as these are NOT Taiyo Yuden brand discs. It seems that only the FUJI 10-packs that say MADE IN JAPAN are the Taiyo Yuden discs. Same thing applies to FUJI with CD-R discs in that only the MADE IN JAPAN labeled packages are Taiyo Yuden CD-R discs.
Anyways ...
If you prefer to buy retail then probably the best deal is WAL-MART which has a 10-pack of MAXELL 4x DVD-R discs for $19.99
The MAXELL DVD-R discs that say MADE IN JAPAN are not Taiyo Yuden but every bit as good.
So MAXELL for best retail price but Taiyo Yuden for best wholesale/direct price.
Yes there are many cheaper DVD-R discs out there but why take the chance? You've already gone through that and as you know it is annoying. DVD is digital so there is no room for error. Unlike VHS and different grades of videotape ... well that just doesn't apply to the digital world. Either it works well or it doesn't.
Hope this helps
