So I have this dvd rip of a movie that some one has encoded to DIVX but its monsterously huge at 1.43 gigs. I read the pages on using Virtualdub and was able to split the movie at the exact frame that would make sense to split the movie into two but each half is still bigger than a 700mb cd-r can bear. Is there an app that I can use to shrink the files or rerender it to a smaller sizes to burn without losing too much quality?

I have a similar problem, too. I have a 798MB AVI that I want to shrink to fit on a 700MB CD. I've tried changing the FPS with VirtualDub, but I must be choosing the wrong compression or something because my ending files are bigger than my original even though the frames per second are changed.
Maybe someone can help with some recommended VirtualDub settings. -
Well, why not try out recompressing the file at different bitrates with DivX on VDub? If you look under TOOLS on the left, you can check out programs that "calculate" what bitrate to shoot for in order to fit a certain sizes/lengthed video on a certain CD.
Erm... I hope you understood what I meant.
Sorry, this Premiere 6.0 is being a pain and I need sleep.
I probably should do that now.
Night.

your problem is easily solved by using virtual dub and cutting your files down to smaller burnable sizes.
for perenial newb I'd say its gonna take cutting your file into 3 parts.
for eye of beholder its going to take 2.
goto vcdhelp and look for the section how to-->edit.
Then scroll down and find how to edit/cut or join divx.
your answers lie there. follow the instructions and experiment where is best to cut the file.
I had a similar problem with a 933mb avi file so I cut it down to part 1 & part 2. be sure to use direct stream copy under video.
hope this helps -
Yes you can split avi up into 3 diff parts using virtualdub...i have had to do that on afew also...but i keep running into 'out of sync audio with video' probs with doing that....
