The very first question is does it play on your pc ok?
It may be that you do not have the correct 'codec' installed.
If you download AVIcodec . This will tell you what the AVI file is , there are many different kinds if AVI file .
    i.e Xvid , DivX3 , DivX4 , DivX5 , MP43 and the list goes on.

andyp1 is right in what he says, but I'd say it's more than likely that it does play on your computer otherwise you'd be complaining about that rather than TMPGEnc not recognising it.

It is quite common for TMPGEnc to have problems opening MPEG4 files of various types. XviD is the one it most often has a cow with, but I have some DivX ones it refuses to open as well. The cause of this is unknown to me and I suspect only the authors of TMPGEnc would know for sure.

In any case though, it's not a big deal because it's very easy to get around. You just need to frameserve the MPEG4 you want to open through VirtualDub into TMPGEnc. Doing this doesn't modify the video in any way whatsoever, but it does hide whatever aspect of it that is causing TMPGEnc to give you the error. Just do a search in guides for VirtualDub and frameserving and you'll find a step by step procedure in there to show you exactly how to do this.

  4. Another method to use is to raise the priority of the directshow filter in TMPGEnc. This works for me. I've successfully converted XVIDs with no problems. By the way, I use ffdshow as my decompressor.
