Ok, there seems to be alot of problems with this ugly drive. Most people (like me) can't get it to burn passed 2X.
I have tried many different medias and all the firmwares with no luck at all. I even used a hacked firmware that transformed my Sony DRU-500ax into a Lite-On LDW-400D which is supposedly a better drive, and still no luck
If you own this drive and successfully burn at 4X, please let us all know the media you used, and your firmware version. And if possible, when and where you bought the media.
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

I went through all the firmware versions and was always able to burn at 4x for approximately 15 months - then it died a slow death.
Media I used was Verbatim DataLife Plus, TDK, Imation and Maxell. The Verbatim and TDK was purchased at Target. The Imation was purchased at CompUSA - however it was the -R so it only burned at 2x. The Maxell was purchased at OfficeDepot - buy one, get one free (15 pack spindles).
As to when I bought the media - it was during the months of January, 2003 to present. The exact time I bought the DRU500a until it's untimely (or timely) death. -
I have never had any problems with sony dru-500a. I upgraded to Firmware 2.0H last month. My OS Windows ME. I have burned Memorex (CMC) DVD-R 4X and not one has failed me.

500ax =500a with a new firmware -
I have a 500ax, it's about a year old now. I haven't had any problems burning, still on the original firmware.
I recently switched to Memorex 4x dvd-rs for most of my media (sorry, don't have a media code, but it's the ones that are on sale at Best Buy all the time). They burn fine at 4x, and they are the first brand I've found that consistently burns at 4x.- housepig

I have not made a single coaster yet and everything I have burned on them plays perfectly.
I do get an error message with roxio when it completes the burn. (I cant remember what the message says) but it still plays fine...
go figure? -
Mob and Fairhope,
Approximately how many dvd's have you guys done? -
firmware 1.0f (but others work too, but not all) and dvd-r generic 2x media from yesbuy.net (silver top/purple bottom) always yield true 4x speed! $50 for 100spindle of these 2x media. can't beat that! You hear me right...true 4x 12-15min full disc from 2x generic media with my sony500a and have done countless this way without coasters...love the sony drive for these reasons!

I also use a separate dvd-rom to rip.
DVD-ROM prices are very low. -
I've burned at 4x since the "f" firmware update. Mostly memorex from Staples. Some Maxell. Never any problems. Not a single coaster.

Firmware 2.0F
I have been able to burn every single DVD+R (those that are 4x certified) at 4x except for a pile of the pathetic Arita discs I bought recently, these failed randomly anyway.
The only problem I had was with a crappy Princo 4x -R disc, the burn started at 4x and then dropped to 2x gradually. -
Was the first post a typo. I haven't had any problems with my drive burning 4x. I would buy another one, but I want to wait for the dual layer breads and faster drives.

I guess they'll be sweet for home movies/slideshow,etc for max capacity.

I bought my sony dru500A in early 2003. Firmware 2.0G, Nero 5.5.10, DVDDecrypter, DVDShrink
I ripped with a different DVD-ROM and burn over 1000's DVD-Rs. Using all generic DVD-R from www.shop4Tech.com - 4X Matrix for $.55 a piece.
This drive is awesome and never had trouble with it. -
I've been able to burn TDK and Vervatim at x4 ever since I bought it. Always used up to date firmare.
Regards,
Rob -
I have a DRU500A - version 1.0f (I think). If I remember correct, this was the first version of firmware released by that supported 4x burning. I just bought a 15 pack of TDK +R discs Friday, and it burned 4x stable. Win2k SP4 OS, I use Nero 5.5.xxxxxx for burning.

Is your IDE channel set to DMA or PIO? You may want to check that.
Also, what dvd burning program are you using?
What media are you using (brand and manufacturing country)?
Is the media true 4x? -
I cannot remember the last bad burn I had with this drive - it was some crap -R media (can't remember the brand). I mostly use 2.4x and 4x memorex that I get from the local store.

I used alot of different media, Ritek G04 - Princo 4X white tops - and I just bought some cheap media off ebay because some guy here said that media worked for him in his dru-500ax and guess what... doesnt burn at 4X for me.
I have had it with this shit drive. Im getting a new one. I'm done with sony for life. -
I own the dru-500ax....
Still using the original firmware and its been flawless since now, been like almost a year. I did have trouble burning a 4x but the problem wasnt the burner, the problem was the program I was using. I was using 2x dvd-r's with DVD Decrypter with n/p, I put the 4x and I kept getting this annoying error. At first I thought it was the DVD-R that was scratched, then I though it was the file, after 5 DVDR-R's down the drain I found out it was DVD Decrypter that didnt allow the crappy media DVD-R disc. Worked with Nero.
Anyways works with Starmedia Premium Quality (*cough* yah quality my ass), and works with Nero Burning Rom, not DD. Hope this helps -
Never had a problem burning a MEDIA MARKED as 4X
with this burner.
It is the greatest
Maybe its cause I never upgraded or flashed the FIRMWARE ..
It came with 4x capable firmware in the box.
I have burned 750 discs with this drive as of March 25
