  4. Get a program called gspot and check the avi to see what kind of audio it is. If its ac3 audio tmpgenc wont encode it, you will have to split the audio from avi using virtualdub into a wav file and then encode the avi and the wav file together.

Open the avi with goldwave and save the audio as pcm wav and then encode, you can also use besweet to encode the ac3 to pcm wav or mp2.If the mpg is for dvd authoring then you dont need to encode the ac3.

You might want to try to install the AC3 ACM Decompressor

    Why?

Well here is the description of this usefull ummm utility I guess you would call it:

"Install this and you can convert/decompress AC3 audio directly to WAV/MP3 using Virtualdub. This also works with AVIsynth, TMPGEnc, allowing you to use AC3 encoded AVI files, not normally recognised."

Of course you will loose your original AC-3 audio since this will end up converting it to WAV or MP3/MP2 ... this might not be such a big deal if it is only 2.0 AC-3 but that would be a shame if it were 5.1 AC-3
