I have an avi file with the following specs according to gspot:
    720x352 (2.05:1)
    25 fps
    DivX 4
    MPEG-1 Layer 3
    192 kb/s (96/ch, stereo) CBR

I have tried to convert it with TMPGEnc and everytime the picture gets either stretched or squashed together. And so I have a couple of questions from when I open the wizard in TMPGEnc:
    1. How can I decide if I should convert to PAL or NTSC, 4:3 or 16:9? Does it have anything to do with the original file which is what, 4:3 or 16:9?

    2. In Expert Settings For Source, do I choose VGA or something else?

    3. On the Filter page setting, do I need to change anything under Other Settings ie Video Arange Method: Full Screen(Keep aspect ratio) or something else?

Sorry for asking these questions here but I am sick of having to wait 5 hours for each change that I make.

The 25 fps shows you that its PAL so leave it as PAL

Do a small bit at a time instead of the whole film then

Would use pal 16:9 and as VCDHunter said, yes 1:1 VGA for input

But for Video Arange Method: I would def use Full Screen(Keep aspect ratio)
This will preserve all of the picture and add black bars (about 38px) top + bottom for you

There is an excellent page on here omewher all about aspect ratios - do a search

Sorry, I misread his post - I thought he was asking if he should change that
