I am running xp and use DVD XCopy Platinum or Xpress. I backup 99% of all my dvds without a single problem. However, there a cases in which it gets through the first step (the ripping it) and when it gets to the second step it says "insert blank disk" so I do and hit start. It then immediatly says "error writing disk" Like I said, I have few disks that will do this. One scenario is the Sopranos 4th season disk 2. I have backed up all 4 of the seasons except that one disk without any problems. Someone told me that disney movies will be the same and that the problem is Macro Vision and I need a decrypter. Is this true? If so, where do I download a decrypter and how do I know which one to use. I don't even know what a decrypter is. Also, will it automatically work with my XCopy. If not, what do I do.

Tom Sawyer used that trick to get someone to paint a fence for him.
It doesn't work on people who have read the story. -
Someone told me that disney movies will be the same and that the problem is Macro Vision and I need a decrypter.
Step 2 - Read a guide. You will find them to the left.
Step 3 - Read "What is DVDR". You will find it to the top left.
Step 4 - Download some freeware.
Step 5 - Teach yourself a few things by doing some research. This is not DVD Copying for Dummies! If in doubt, Google it. -
I am very happy with the xcopy and I can do a complete movie in about 45 minutes with virtually no problems. I'm just trying to figure out how to get around this problem because I don't understand all these other programs and what they do. I want to keep it simple and I'm looking just for a download that will eliminate these problems that won't create another step. Also, I keep seeing these things for 9-5. Is there a program I can download that will help me with that or can I just break my dvd up into 2 discs by selecting chapters say 1-6 on one disk and 7-12 on another.
Any suggestions or ideas? -

1. Go here. I would use either DVDDecrypter or Smartripper.
2. Go here and do a search for guides using your ripper downloaded in 1.
DVD X Copy should have its own ripper. If it doesn't then it is not worth the plastic sleeve it came in.If in doubt, Google it. -
I know everything.
1) 'Error writing disc' could mean you're DVD writer doesn't like the blank disc you put in the drive. What brand of media are you using?
2) Macrovision is a copy-protection scheme used to deter copying via tape or analog capture cards. Decryption programs strip the CSS protection from the disc and are not affected by Macrovision.
Your knowledge of the hobby is such that it will be very difficult to troubleshoot your problem. When these problems come up, there are many possibilities. Your method is too streamlined to really figure out what is wrong at this point. However, three things popped into my head almost immediately...
1) The original disc is scratched/smudged and the data that was transferred got corrupted,
2) The blank disc did not pass a Power Calibration Test.
Try doing a backup using another method. Jimmalenko has pointed you in the right direction. The reason I suggest this is because if another method works, we can blame DVD XCopy, which is my third choice. -
I always pass on posts like this. Good luck.
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they? -
As mentioned above ... it could just be the odd dodgy original or blank disk.
Only you can determine this.
DVDXCopy is not the choice of the majority of people on here, for many reasons, so you may draw some conclusions from that (i.e. the people who know everything)
Grab yourself a copy of DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink (Both Freeware)and sell DVDXCopy to a novice, who isn't "clued up" yet -
WOW jumped on twice in seven minutes..!!!
I can only re-iterate what others have already said.
get rid of DVD X COPY
read the guides......download free software....
ideally download ripper, shrinker (if necessary), author (if necessary) and burner seperately..
I use DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter and Nero.
First two VERY easy to use even without a guide and Nero because i havent had any problems with it yet and it was free with my drive.

I agree...........DVD Shrink and DVDecrypter have worked where others have failed. Yes including Disney!!!

nobody knows everything-many years ago my dad summed this up by defining exactly what an expert is:
X is an unspecified amount and a Spert is i small jet of water-so there you go! -
Hi all.
sj022698, I'd also suggest you use DVD Shrink for the problematic discs.
The latest stable beta, v3.1.7b5, is available at dvdshrink.org.
Some user-friendly guides to get you going can be found at DVDShrink.info.
If you also download DVD Decrypter you will be able to rip/shrink with DVD Shrink, saving its output as an ISO image, and then burn the image with DVD Decrypter. -
I think you folks are being a bit hard on DVDXCopy. Although DVDXCopy Express was tested, these folks felt the vid quaity was very good. Also note that Shrink and Recode were rated last.

Thanks for posting that link.
My firewall just exploded because somebody wanted to download a program into my computer! -
I just know everything that others don't know so I fill in the gaps

i agree with:
1) read the guides
2) get dvddecrypter, dvdshrink, and nero 6 (all can be had for nada, zero, zip)
3) practice and make a couple coasters before you get the hang of it. nothing that is worthwhile is gonna do it by itself for you. -
I don't need to know everything. I just need to know 2 things:
-- 1. DVDXCOPY is junk.
-- 2. You have not read much, so start doing that.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)
FAQs: Best Blank Discs • Best TBCs • Best VCRs for capture • Restore VHS -
my dad said much the same thing though a spert was a drip under pressure.

jimmalenko:
Your knowledge of ripping DVD's is astounding! Eclipsed only by your uncanny ability to make somebody less knowledgeable than you feel stupid. This forum is called DVDR Help is it not? If you didn't want to answer the poster's question, you didn't have to. It's kind of silly to me that you would take the time (twice!) out of your obviously busy schedule to ridicule somebody who simply had a question wich MANY other people on this forum were able to answer fairly concisely. In short, despite your obvious mental superiority, there's no reason to be a dick to a guy who just had a question. -

the problem with most forums is that there are too many Ego's, yet so little space
there's nothing wrong with a newbie asking a dumb question and I can't believe people get so upset about it and feel the need to ridicule others in this way
I don't suppose they have ever asked a dumb question before and I'm not talking about just DVD's etc
don't give me the stupid 'they should read the guides' crap either. If that's the answer just politely mention 'please read the guides' if you want to get your post count higher and walk away. There's no need for the tone of some of the replies I see from some people
if you can't politely reply then just ignore it as someone else will give them a decent reply!. If you can't do those 2 things then you are obvioulsy in need of an Ego boost by ridiculing those less knowledgable than yourself instead of letting the thread die
I'm well impressed LOL
just accept there will always be these types of questions but most n00bs soon realise how to go about things, so why not just give them a friendly push instead of harsh response?
so grow up people and get a 'real' life as some attitudes I see would get them a good kicking in my local pub and unless you are built like a brick shit house you wouldn't last long
maybe some of these guys are n00bs when it comes to forum etiquette :P -
