  4. Okay okay. I see that blank DVD-Rs can be purchased in bulk for $1 per disk. A pretty good value. And I also see that DVD-R recorders are going for maybe $100 . So again we are looking good.

The software seems to have automated and stabilized more. Thus making it fast and reliable. Maybe I can convert at the speed that the movie plays.

BUT......... There is still macrovision to deal with. I am trying to convert my owned VHS tapes (I have a big pile) to DVDs. In order to do that I need to play the VHS tapes and then capture the video stream with my ATI AIW card. But my AIW card reacts to macrovision, and messes up the result. So I am trying to find a hardware cable, or other tool to remove macrovision from the video out stream from my VHS tape.

Maybe someone has a suggestion of a capture card that does not react to macrovision like my ATI AIW does?

Does anyone remember the Atari 2600 ads for a kit you could buy that would allow you to do BASIC programming on it?

I remember the ads but don't ever remember seeing it stores so maybe it never came out?

I was rather young at the time hehehe so maybe I just missed it since I was looking for games.

First computer here ... a VIC-20 with my first game being ADVENTURE on cartridge ... it was a ZORK like text adventure which as I recall was programmed by a guy that did a lot of games like that ... I forget his name now ... I think the same guy was famous for some paper role-playing games but not TSR ... I think his big paper game was CAR WARS or something like that ... Origin (makers of ULTIMA) made a C-64 computer game version but under a different title (I think it was called DUEL).

    Wait was it Steve Jackson?

    P.S.
Oh yes I also had a game on "audio" cassette but it was sooooooooo slow as to be unplayable. Life was actually pretty nice game playing wise with the C-64 though hehehe

Now I feel bad for not hammering the original poster in the first place for his comment:
So it is cheaper and less aggravating to just buy DVDs.
Which implies to me he doesn't own what he is backing up.

    Kevin,
I use a Dazzle DVC II for capturing MPEG2's and it ignores macrovision. This is the only card I have experience with. It's a cranky card but produces good results.

  9. In Europe, you can buy a gadget that plugs into the SCART connector that will disable macrovision, but I guess you're in the U.S. so don't use SCART. I don't know if similar exists for your systems, but I wouldn't mind betting there is......

There are also cracks around for the ATI AIW cards that disable the macrovision too. I believe the AIW has a registry code that can be set to not look for the macrovision signal.

Some recording devices decode the macrovision, they're the ones that give the weird pulsing colours/brightnesses when you do try to record. Others (like the AIW) detect the presence of the macrovision signal and just refuses to activate record mode.

I suggest you do some serious Googling to see what you can find. Also have a look here for a whealth of ATI related info

  10. 3 hours! Hmmm, as someone said...I got a Mesh 1.4GHZ PC overclocked with a Plextor PX-504A DVD Writer and using DVDXCOPY Platinum it only takes about 1 hr maybe 1 and a half. Reading seems to be the slowest bit, writing is done in no time at all, with perfect results!
