  1. Apologies if the answer to this is obvious to everyone except me, but I've searched & the only promising threads go on about specific DVD titles, not all of them!

Anyhoo, never seen this before - I have an LG GDR-8162B dvd-rom drive, and while it plays back all commercial DVDs with suitable player software ok, it flatly refuses to copy ANY encrypted VOBs from those DVDs across to my harddrive, meaning that all ripper software and even windows explorer is useless. It copies across all other files and unencrypted VOBs with no problem whatsoever.

Refusing to transfer only encrypted VOBs to HD is just a bit too convenient & selective for it to be a fault, so is this some form of anti-rip protection in the firmware? If so, how common is this in recent DVD-ROM drives, and is there a blacklist of those inflicted with it?

  2. when you say all rippers, are you talking about dvd decrypter or smart ripper. If it is encrypted, yes, you will not be able to simply move it using windows explorer.

If you have used dvd decrypter and verified in the settings that it will remove all encryption, what version are you using?

What is the file sizes reported by Exployer? Encrypted or not, you can still use "drag and drop" to move things from your DVD-ROM to your hard drive (but the moved files remain encrypted, so are of no use to you).

  4. if you're not using dvd decrypter to rip the dvd to the hard drive... then use it and then post your results.

If you are trying to use dvd decrypter and still no luck, you may have to ajust the decryption settings a bit.

  5. After much trial & error, I've found a solution but not an explanation! I noticed that smartripper 2.40 was the only ripper that worked, and after this was run, all the other rippers started working, I can even copy with explorer ! Re-boot the pc, and encrypted vobs were off-limits again until smartripper is run, then anything can access them - wierd or what?! I re-booted several times just to confirm that I was'nt seeing things, its almost as if smartripper is patching something.
What the hell is going on here? Smartripper is not even that new!

It's called Validating the Drive. WinDVD or PowerDVD will also do that.
Yes there is protection in the drive , and in Windoze.
