  1. Hi,

Could you help. Is there a program out there that will allow me to put a DVD in the drive and then capture stills from it. My daughter has an important exam project and we have a documentary on DVD that she would like to use pictures from. Any ideas please?

    Thanks

    Hi musotechy

A software DVD player can do this.

I use PowerDVD and its perfect for capturing stills from a dvd.

    Hope this helps.

  4. I don't know if you can capture a picture directly from a dvd. Here is one way you can do it. I did this with my vacation video. I have dvddecrypter. I first decrypted my vacation video to make vobs. I then changed the extension from vob to mpg. I opened the mpg video iwth windows movie maker. In windows movie maker there is the area where all the buttons are. When the video played I pressed the pause button and then pressed the little camera button and it will save it to the directory where you placed the picture. I hope you understand the process I did. You don't have to use windows movie maker. if you have ulead, the same process should work. I hope it works. Dvd decrypter is a free software. Or if you have dvdcopy if should do the same as dvddecrypter

Renegade6, yes you can capture directly from a dvd. i do this many times.

Renegade6, your method may work, but:

1 - too much work to do (do x number of tasks)
2 - takes too long (first decrpyper dvd, change extension etc..)
3 - can be complex for newbies

Using PowerDVD, just play the movie, go the scene you want to capture, press the capture button, takes only a few seconds.

if you dont own PowerDVD, you can always download a trial version. or you can download a trial version of WinDVD and try that. which ever method you prefer, the choice is yours.

  6. Waheed thanks for the info. I never knew PowerDvd did that, I even have
PowerDvd. When capturing, can you select a your own folder to save them to?

Yes you can, the setting is somewhere in the advanced options dialog. Can't remember exactly where.

yes, Open PowerDVD, Click on the Configuration icon, On the Player Settings tab, click on the Advanced button, go to the snapshots tab, this will give you four options:

    1 - Capture to clipboard
2 - Capture to Wallpaper (center)
3 - Capture to Wallpaper (tile)
    4 - Capture to File

Choose option 4, then click on the browse icon, now you can specify which folder you want to capture the images too.

    Hope this Helps

  10. InterVideo DVDCopy Gold and Platinum let you capture a frame as bmp or jpg (your choice). Very simple and straighfoward.

  13. PowerDVD only does one frame at a time, and sometimes does not retain the proper resolution (some kind of interlacing [telecined] make the image shorter). any suggestions for automatic frame capture? some DVD's have slide shows in vobs that sould be exportable somehow to JPGs or something all at once...

Powerdvd outputs the bmp at 720zx480/576 so just resize to 640x480/576.

  15. they do seem to be 720x480 after all, but the PowerDVD window expands the dvd window hight for some reason, so it seemed inconsistant.

If the aspect ratio looks whacked out on powerdvd just right click on the screen and choose keep aspect ration or one of the other options to get the right screen size before you do a cap.
