Hi all, I'm using Nero 6 to burn my .iso files that Ulead DVD Workshop 2 creates. While Ulead is writing the image, it gives the message "writing udf disk image" Now I've never heard of UDF before and I have heard of ISO before. So when I go to Nero, it has the option of UDF, ISO, or UDF/ISO. I've been burning them under the ISO category. Can someone tell me what the other two are? Should I be burning UDF since ulead said it was writing a UDF disk image? Please advise...

In short, keep doing what you have been doing. Because you are building an ISO image, you use the ISO section. I believe UDF basically just means a data DVD, while UDF/ISO is what you need for DVD-Video if you have your AUDIO_TS & VIDEO_TS folders on their own instead of inside an ISO.
    If in doubt, Google it.

really? since the time I had written the post, I have read that UDF 1.02 is the standard for the most compatibility in DVD players everywhere... and then there is that other option ISO/UDF,, I'm guessing that's both? How could that be though if they're two diffenere file structures?

UDF/ISO is a hybrid burning format. Some DVD players require it but you are spot on with UDF 1.02.

If your method of building an ISO is working fine, stick with that.
    If in doubt, Google it.

the ISO is working fine with MY dvd player, but the DVD I'm burning is going to be submitted as a master for replication, and ultimately duplicated or replicated for sale to customers.... That's why I'm wondering if maybe I should do UDF/ISO for the sake of the customers

There's a fair chance that Ulead DVD Workshop 2 is doing the right thing by you. You should be able to find out if it outputs its ISO files using UDF 1.02. Do a google or something.

Check this out. Written by the author of DVD Shrink. He uses UDF/ISO. I'm sure there must be a good reason - I just don't know what it is.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I think I'm missing something, but it just became apparent, correct me if I'm wrong, but when doing UDF/ISO, you're not burning the image file, you're burning the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS directories....this I now know because I tried doing UDF/ISO in Nero, selected the .iso file , and all it did was burn the image file to the DVD (copied from the hard drive to the DVD) so now I have the .iso file on the dvd, ha ha ha....

  9. when you burn an ISO that UMF made you aren't using any setting in Nero. The ISO file itself contains all the settings. all you do is point nero to the image file and tell it to burn it. as far as dropping the files into nero and having it burn, use DVD-Video template. It's worked just fine since the later 5.5 versions.

Hmm, let me see if I understand,,, when DVDWS2 says it's writing the UDF image file,,, when I burn that .iso in Nero, it's already in the UDF format, is this correct? I know what you mean when you say to just open the .iso and burn it, there is no setting for ISO or UDF, so it makes sense that the file structure is already written into the ISO...

Here's another question along these lines, better (in terms of compatibility) to create the DVD folders with DVDWS2 and burn the folders to the DVD-R,, OR to create the .iso and burn that to the DVD-R ?

UDF is the format set top DVD players use. Use 1.02 to make it backwards compatible with newer players. Use the UDF/ISO bridge setting if you also want to be able to play your disc back on an older PC (pre-Win98) and (some) older Macs, as they predate the UDF file format and use the older ISO 9660 standard.

That's my understanding of it anyways.

  14. Best method...

Get Ulead to create the VIDEO_TS foler. Create an empty AUDIO_TS foler manually. Open Nero and go to the bottom template. Choose DVD-ROM UDF/ISO. Drag your two folders in to the compilation, click burn compilation. On the pop screen click the UDF tab, make sure that the file version is set to "UDF 1.02" and then click burn. Safest burn format for playing back in set-top boxes.

New set-top boxes use UDF 1.05 but are backward compatable with 1.02.

Been using this method for around 18 months burning approx 30 DVD's per week, no coasters what so ever.

    Thanks
