I have a XVId clip whose audio is ac3 188,287KB, I have converted this using both Ac3tool & Headache to a WAV file and it has increased to 630MB which is more than that of the video itself. I have no need to encode, so what can I do to reduce the WAV before merging the audio and video together with virtualdub? I also tried converting it to an mp3 file which was around 57MB but I cannot merge the mp3 audio and video avi using virtualdub can I?? Please tell me what is the best option thanks

ac3 is highly compressed ... wav is not compressed .. therefore it will get larger ...

BEST option is to leave it as ac3 and xvid ... and dont do anything to either ..

But it has to be converted to be heard, if I leave it is as it is I can't hear it and plus I need to mux both video and audio using virtualdub. Perhaps there might be a way of recompressing the wav audio to make it smaller? . Thanks BJ M however, if u could offer any further help it would be much appreciated or anyone else for that matter cheers.

well you could re-compress it back to ac3 ... but that would be silly ...

you can hear it fine as ac3 ... just play it in powerdvd or windvd or media player clasic ...

you dont need to mux or convert or anthing ...

I am not quite sure if I have made myself clear. I need to remux the audio and video to a reasonable size so I can burn it to disc. It's not for my pc.

What size, Dude ? Do you want to make VCD, SVCD, what ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

I worked it out myself dude. I first converted the ac3 to wav, then to mp3 as it seems you can't convert it directly, then merged the audio/video using virtualdub mp3. This resulted in a nice tiny mp3 file unlike the huge wav. For those interested in my case it was going to be a dvd so I formatted it with 48hz sampling rate. Thanks for your input anyway and I hope mine helps future members .

This will confuse future members, as ac3 is the audio format for DVD!No need to convert it to anything else, just demux and let the Authoring process remux.

AC-3 and MP3 will be the exact same size (more or less) at the same bitrate. So a 192kbps AC-3 file will be the same size as a 192kbps MP3 file.

Again another person asking for help without CLEARLY telling us what it is they need or exactly why they are doing it. Also not enough details about the source materials either.

makes no sense -- dvd's dont play mp3 when its in a movie and you cant multiplex mpeg2 with mp3 for a dvd .....

dvd's use mpeg2 and ac3 (or lpcm) --- so your whole post makes no sense what so ever ...

unless you have a dvd player that plays divx .. but those also will have played the ac3 ..... so you didnt have to anything ...

plus the conversion from ac3 to wav , back to mp3 really wacks the quality of the audio anyway ...

Yes FULCILVES John Coleman that's true I was asking for help not your SARCASM, but if that is all you can afford God help you my friend.

BJ M in response to your post. That's just it I DO have a divx player. But still feel the need to convert the ac3 audio to a format that will play on disc. The file as it comes has no sound it has to be converted to something. I accept that if you are making a DVD movie then perhaps the audio does have to be mp2/pcm, however, I was just burning an xvid clip with ac3 audio. Anyway let's forget it as I said before I have solved it my way and the film's fine.
