Hello All,
Please excuse if this is a simple question but I am a major newbie. I have been trying to find out how to save a quicktime clip that can be seen over the web but cannot be saved to the harddrive. I have searched old forum post and I have found some info but it got a little confusing when people started using all sorts of different programs (dumpster, etc..). I have found the temp file by doing a file modification search when I view the clip. I have copied the temp file to another folder so it is on my harddrive waiting for me to do something intelligent with it. The file has no extension.
My mission is to be able to get this darn file to work. This is what I have:
Quicktime 6.5 (not Pro) and Vegas Video 4(demo).
Could I pull a "MacGyver" and do this with what I have or do I need a whole bunch of other programs? Should I worry that the file has no extension and it not able to be read by Vegas?? Will I be branded a major loser for not knowing this...??
help...
thx

have you tried to rename it "temp.mov" and load it into vegas yet ?

BJ_M,
Thanks for the info.
I did try to rename it with a ".mov" extension but Vegas said that it was an unsupported format. I also downloaded tmpgenc and that also said that the file is unsupported.
The file I am actually trying to save is the new lotr trailer. I viewed it through the website then I saved the temp file it created. From that point on I have been stuck.
thx -
maybe the temp file you have is not a mov format - because vegas can read qt files just fine ..
but if its that trailer -- you have to use tmpgenc (i did it already in fact) , and used crop function to cut off the player ....
make sure you install the qt plugin for tmpgenc (i forgot to mention that) ...
its in tools section"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
QuickTime is getting tricky, i have resorted to saving the web-page itself and searching through HTML in notepad to find the original link to the MOV files.
I remember it being a whole lot easier a few years ago. You could just search your Temporary Internet Files for the MOV files. The QuickTime Cache files i've messed with lately won't play if you just rename them to MOV.
If you find something that works well, i'd like to hear about it. -
perhaps the file itself that you pulled, the "temp" file is really a shortcut file to the actual file itself. I dl streaming media often enough (ones that cannot be saved to hardrive) and i can probably get the true url/file for you. Could you post the addy of where online the file you want is?

Hi,
I think I am not doing something right.(most likely newbie related)
I went ahead and got that quicktime plugin and put it in the correct folder.
I tried to open that temp file through tmpgenc but it still gave me that error (not supported).
Here is what I have done step-by-step.
1) go to lotr site and view the trailer
2) after it loads and I start seeing it I do a search in the temp folder to see what was created
3) I spot the file "QTPluginTemp10543972" (no extension) which is 63.8 Mb
4) I copy this file to another folder
5) Try to open this file with tmpgenc
6) After it doesn't work I rename the file with a ".mov" extension
7) Try to open it again but to no avail
8) Wish I wasn't newbie
there it is. I will keep on trying to search around some more. If you could offer more of that great advice I would appreciate it.
thx -
yeah thats not the right file. Ok here is what i would do (and if you do give me the exact url for the site you want i can get you that trailer)
1. run a packet sniffer program.: what these do is show every single url you go to online. So i would run one called urlsnooper (or it's urlsniffer), i would have it start sniffing the network (you have to be online) and i would go and watch that trailer. Once it loads up and starts playing i would stop the packet sniffer and see what urls it listed.
Most of the time the file you want is not on a normal http server. Mostly (especially for streaming media) they are on mms, etc servers and you would then need another app that can download items from those kinds of servers. Some nice ones are streambox vcr, cocsoft streamdown, get asf, etc.
I would then use one of those and get the file for you. So is the site you want lotr.com ??? and if their is more then 1 trailer exactly which one do you want.
I have some online space and i can upload it there for you to download. I would send you a private message (you see them when you login to post) and i will give you the url for it in that. -
So I got some new information from a variety of sources and I found that this method was relatively easy. It involves looking at the source code from the website the trailer is on. I believe it is very much like what a packet sniffer does.
I was able to download it fairly easily using this method. Hope this helps others.

glad it worked for you just a heads up though a lot of servers now DO block the source code, hide, mangle it, etc and make it very difficult to view using the view source code method. So yes sometimes it works but on a lot of new stuff it doesnt, and that is when you have to use some of the other methods i mentioned.
But i am glad it worked for you--enjoy the trailer!!!!
