  1. Is there any benefit to ripping a disc first or to just let DVDShrink do it all?

    I personally have had no issues with ripping with DVDShrink, then burning DVD Video with NERO...

    no need for me to rip first then shrink...

    just a thought

  3. Some people consider it betetr to spend 10 mins ripping than have the dvd player running for 45 minutes while DvdShrink does it's work.

    It's supposed to make the dvd drive last longer.. makes sense I suppose?

    Unfortunately, some of us only have one dvd drive for playback and recording...which is my case...

    Ripping then burning with the same drive has not caused me a problem in the last year and a half...

    prolly so...drive will prolly crap out sooner or later, but if it ain't broke, why fix it?

    I believe in ripping to my HD:

    a) as mentioned, prolongs the drive's life;
    b) access times are less reading from HD;

    It may or may not be clinically proven that using DVDShrink entirely will result in reduced lifespans for your DVD drives. I don't know for sure, but it makes sense that a drive running for 10 minutes will do more jobs than a drive running for 45. Also, ripping at around 8X-10X beats 2X any day. DVDShrink also encodes reasonably quicker off the HD than on the fly.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    Jimmalenko,
    How do you get the drive to rip at 8x? I thought the ripping is locked at 2x?

    You can find hacked firmware upgrades for most drives that unlock the locked ripping speed.

    Do they have the firmware for plextor 708-A, if so where can I find them? Does ripping at a higher speed result in poor video quaility? THx.

  9. Versions before 3.1 ripped slowly and sometimes wouldn't export any files on my system so I would use DVDDecrypter first.

    jackmac,
    Have you tried www.rpc1.org ?

  10. When I rip with just DVD Shrink, it will not play, on my DVD Burner, but it will play on my stand alone. But if I use DVD Decrypter first, on the same movie it will play on my burner, and standalone.

    I believe it has something to do with the way DVD shrink handles the Regional codes.

    Ripping speed is only locked at 2X for DVD BURNERS. I have not came across a DVD ROM yet that has this restriction. Both my Pioneer and my Liteon DVD ROMs are consistently in the 6X-10X bracket without any firmware hacks or anything. That is the benefit in having a dedicated DVD ROM just for ripping.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    Hey Moviegeek,

    What program should I dl from rpc1.org? There seem to be a bunch of programs. I am using plextor 708-A by the way. Thx.

  14. Definitely use a DVD-Rom to rip. My burner only goes 2x, while the ROM tops out at 9x plus before the layer break. Also, I'm glad someone else thinks that later versions of Shrink rip faster, thought I was my imagination!

    Some DVD Shrink users have conducted some tests and showed the latest versions are ripping as fast as DVD Decrypter.

    This is for straight ripping though, when no compression/processing is involved.

    When using DVD Shrink, do you click on the box "Region Free" which is found in the Backup tab? By clicking on the box, you are actually deselecting the option since the default has it selected. By doing this, it should play fine on any DVD player.
