  2. i would just have the song playing against maybe the music video or just black, and maybe turn the volume down or mute the voice, and just have subtitles show up when those words are supposed to be sung.

  3. No, that's not an answer.

    The question is:
    1) how to superimpose (lyric) text on to video
    2) how to change text color in sync with the music, i.e. highlight the words as they are sung
    3) add two stereo audio streams, one with vocal and one without

Definitely, we should supply the video and the two stereo streams.
I am sure there is some software that can do item#1 and item#2 above.

The real question: which software gives these capabilities ?

Dart Karaoke Studio is the best bundled software package, but costs big bucks.Easy to create Karaoke files.
If you mean creating something from scratch, it would be very time consuming, and difficult to get the timing right.
    Free
You might be able to do something with Avisynth or Virtual Dub and sub station alpha,(create a dark avi with avisynth to length and add text with sub station alpha) but you would still need to lay down the audio, maybe with something like Audacity.
    Cost$
I would use After Effects and use key frames, overlays, and psd files with highlighted text placed along the timeline and render an avi, then lay down the audio with Audition.
Just shut up and listen dumbass
