  1. Is there a way to have the text fade in and out using VirtualDub's Subtitler filter?

Are you still asking for DVD to SVCD conversion and permanent subs? Then use Gabest' vobsub as subtitle filter.
    Here is a little guide.

  3. Nope, I'm asking subtitling using VDub in general, which includes VCDs, SVCDs, DVD to whatever, DivX, AVI, MPEG, blah, you name it.

    Hhm, never heard of Gabest.
Is it better than VDub's Subtitler? So far, VDub's looks the easiest with the most features I have ever seen.

Vobsub is probably the easiest to use VirtualDub subtitle filter if you convert DVD to whatever.

Ok, so then I'm assuming the VOBsub filter and Subtitler are two different filters. I was assuming that the Subtitler would load up a "certain file" off the DVD which is the sole subtitle file (if that even exists..??).

Ok, so what's so good about it? And how does it work?

..hmm how about to read some guides?
If you use Avery Lee's subtitler, you have to rip the subs with subrip, then convert .srt to .ssa.
Vobsub work in a different way. All you have to do is to configure the filter. Save it as avi or frameserve to your favorite encoder.
