Adding a digital input plug to a standalone recorder?

Hello, readers!

I suppose it is technically possible to add a digital input plug or connector to a standalone recorder, or isn't it? If so, how can I achieve this? Are there any companies out there that can perform this modification? Please be so kind to let me know.

The reason of this modification is to record my own CD collection digitally. Let me tell you that I don't collect and I don't buy or sell CD-R's, that is, pre-recorded CD-R's, so I don't care if my own CD-R (or DVD-R) collection has "serial copy management protection" or whatever since I only need them for my own.

No, it's not really possible with a settop recorder. If it were, we wouldn't go to all the trouble to backup the discs we have. You can copy video output into a recorder, but that's an analog signal, not digital. You don't need anything special for that, just play the video and record it. Most video discs, especially DVD, have a 'structure' that simple recording can't duplicate.

Actually, there is a company in Switzerland that do plug modifications to DVD recorders. Please check out:

Unfortunately, these are output modifications, not input modifications, so I am not sure if they deal with modifying inputs as well. Still, this is definitely a place to start.

mini DV tapes are recorded in digital. Through the Firewire cable, you can import them as such on the timeline of a computer v.g. on the imovie timeline of a iMac, edit them as much as you want, and export them still as digital (through the Firewire cable) on a dvd recorder such as the Sharp DV-RW2U and burn them on DVD-R or DVD-RW disks.

I think that other standalone DVD recorders cannot do the same.

The only time DVD discs get analog, is when they hit the screen of your tv.
