  1. Hi

My tv set does not play ntsc videos, only pal. my dvd however (pioneer dv-444-s) plays both. when i put a ntsc dvd disc into the player (region free), the image comes up in color but the image jumps a lot. Is there a way I can stop this, or is this a problem with the tv?

Also, something different happens in a friend's house. When I put the ntsc dvd in his dvd player, the image shows in black and white but the video runs ok, only in black and white. Is this normal? Anyway to show the video in full color?

    Thanks in advance!

I am pretty sure this is the inability of the TV to display the output of the dual able dvd player

I have the same problem on mine only reverse
NTSC tv, with NTSC/PAL dvd palyer that shows black/white wavy picture when set to PAL.

Gumby has a NTSC to PAL converter which you could give a try

  4. I have it now but im curious on how in works. Help me out here: do i have to make a dvd image (with toast?) then convert it in Gumby? What will the result be, another disc image that I can burn with toast?

If the process is as simple as this I'm amazed. Please tell me how shall I proceed. Thanks in advance!

  5. ok I just created a toast image file out of my dvd but when I drag it into Gumby it says the file is not valid (or something like this). Should I drag any other kind of file? Please help...

I don't think Gumby's NTSC/PAL thing will help you, it's for Playstation discs isnt it? As far as I'm aware converting a PAL DVD to NTSC or vice versa is a major undertaking (at least getting it in snyc will be!).

MPEG2 Works comes with an application called DVD Converter for doing the NTSC/PAL conversions. You might give it a try.

Gumby's PAL/NTSC patcher seems oriented just to Playstation 2 games. The manual says it works with .iso and .gi disk images.

  10. I am really interested in this Gumby NTSC to PAL converter, I've been reading on their forum and there are some success stories. But now I am stuck with this problem: how do I make an iso out of a dvd? The only way I can make a disc image (or at least the one I know of) is with toast (creating a .toast file). Toast images are not accepted by Gumby.

Does anyone know how can I create an .iso or a .gi disc image on mac? I will try this thing and post the results here for you...

    I would assume you could
    1. make a disk image of the dvd, rename to .iso
    2. make a disk image of the dvd using ISO 9660 format under data
problem is its not UDF any more... but its worth a shot

i have never attempted this before so I am clueless

  12. I will try to make a toast image file and rename to iso, maybe that will work. Not sure if I understood the second option, can I make that on toast?

  14. Hi! Just a quick update to tell you that changing a .toast extension to .iso didnt do anything for me. I havent tried to create a real iso but I will soo.

Well, I have a similar problem and I do hope somebody in here can give me a good solution!

I've got the Sony SLV-D950 DVD Player/Video Cassette Recorder.I use a scart cable to connect it to my Philips TV set.Now if I play a NTSC video cassette I can watch in colour, yet if I want to watch a NTSC DVD I can only watch in black and white.

    What's the reason for this

check to see if your player has a NTSC output to PAL setting in its setup menu. Mine does, and we can play NTSC disks on our PAL TV with no problems.

I already set the setup mode option to 'auto' which means that it should choose the colour system automatically. However, this didn't solve the problem.

Hmm... could it be that "auto" outputs NTSC from an NTSC disk and PAL from a PAL disk? Is there an option to force it to output a particular format no matter what the disk?

In fact there are three menu options as for the colour system, and that

    1. Auto for automatical colour system selection
    2. B/W for black and white movies
    3. PAL for PAL DVD's

No, they don't sound very helpful. I have a Panasonic player, and it has no setting at all for colour. Nothing about specifying B/W output. But it has a specific setting for PAL60 output on NTSC disks, along with PCM audio output of MPEG audio.
