By playing around with just about every proggie out there that parses Flash .swf files, I have decided to document what I have learned while putting my collection of funny Flash animations on DVD!
How to convert .swf files to DVD (without a loss of quality)
Author: space_monkey March 2004
------------------------------------------------------------
Software used:
Magic Swf2Avi v.2.10 (http://www.effectmatrix.com) or SoThink SWF Decompiler
CoolEdit Pro v.2.0 (now called Adobe Audition) or whatever mp3->wav proggie
Flashants SWF2Video v.1.1 (http://www.flashants.com)
Adobe Premiere v.7.0 or VirtualDubMod 1.5.10.1
TMPGEnc DVD Author v.1.5.20.62 (http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/tda.html)
Strategy A - The easy way:
==========================
1. Download Flashants SWF2Video Plugin for Adobe Premiere. (note that the trial version puts a crazy watermark on top of the output video file, so don't even bother unless you buy the full version)
2. Start Adobe Premiere, import your swf file, Export to DVD burner or Export using the Adobe Media Encoder to save it to an .m2v file.
3. Start TMPGEnc DVD Author and master your DVD.
4. Burn and enjoy.
Strategy B - The hard way:
==========================
Rip the audio:
--------------
1. Start Magic Swf2Avi, click the "Add Files" or the "Add Folder" button and import all the .swf files you want to convert. Click the "Options" button, goto the "Directory" tab and set the "Converted file directory" to wherever you want to output the files. Then click "Extract mp3", and now we're done with this proggie since it doesn't support uncompressed video output. You could also use SoThink SWF Decompiler to extract the audio for each swf file, but it doesn't support batch ripping of the audio track so I would avoid this unless I only want to convert a few swf files.
2.Start CoolEdit Pro or whatever proggie you want to use that will batch convert all the mp3 files to wav. In CoolEdit at least, goto File -> Batch File Convert.., Click "Add Files" and select all the mp3 files you made in step 1. Then go to the "Resample" tab, and uncheck "Convert Sample Type". On the "New Format" tab I chose "Windows PCM (*.wav)" as the "Output Format", and then click the "Destination" tab to select where you want the files to go. Then click the "Run Batch" button on the right and CoolEdit does all the converting for you!
Rip the video:
--------------
3. Start SWF2Video, File->Open, select the first .swf file you want to rip video from. File-Create AVI, keep the filename the same, then in the AVI Export Setting dialog box change the Audio to "None" instead of "Record from current SWF file". If you can find a way to get SWF2Video to output an AVI file using the audio stream from the swf file, then please let me know so that I can remove steps 1 and 2. I suspect my Hercules Fortissimo3 sound card just isn't supported by the software.
Remux audio and video:
----------------------
4. First try using VirtualDubMod, drag in the .avi file you made in step 3, Streams->Stream List, click the "Add" button and find the .wav audio file you made in step 2. Click Ok, then File->Save As, type in a filename.avi, and then it'll mux the video and audio for you.
5. If you have audio/video sync problems, then you need to use Adobe Premiere to adjust where the audio track starts and/or ends.
