Which version of ASPI....

and from who should be installed on my system. I found some posts that referred to Adaptec vs Nero; saying that the Nero version is better; so this obviously raised some interest.

My DVD burner is the Sony DRU500A with 1.0d f/ware and the CD-R is PlexWriter 1210A. I've started installing DVD Shrink; DVD Decrypter; Nero 6.0.0.19; DVD Identifier. Still considering Alcohol 120 & DVDXCOPY.

From the apps you've listed so far it doesn't sound like you need any version of ASPI as longas your using Windows XP.

Yes I am using XP.

It was mentioned on another site that ASPI should be installed. What is the function of the ASPI layer?

Its still best to have an ASPI layer installed. I use the Force ASPI from the downloads page. its basically Adaptecs 4.61 version I believe, which is a lot more stable than their current buggy 4.72 version. I haven't use the Nero ASPI myself.
