I noticed that there are 2 kind of this disk... Is there any way to tell if it is a CMC or the Ricoh?
If anyone has found a way to tell, please let me know.. I noticed that there are 2 different box styles... One box has just the top flap that opens, the second kind has a tab to pull out, and then the top flap opens... Does this help separate the 2? Any help on this would be great...
Thanks....

You post the same question in cdfreaks.com lol
I just replied there lol
I was curious too lol -
Memorex +r are RICOHs,
-r are @#$$% craps...CMC
I bought a spindle of Memorex +r's and loved them,
then I went and bought more, this time -r's and my sony writer cannot write on them. Lost my receipt and don't know if I have to eat these peices of shits.

I'm pretty sure the OP is asking on how to identify w/o using dvdinfo, just by looking at the packaging. And I can sympathize, bought some at Best Buy, they told me I could return open media, if all were unused, bunch of BS, should have known better. But back to the point, for the fifty pack, some said that the Ricoh's come in a spindle with a grey/gray base, but don't me too it. And yes, they seem to be replacing their +r media with CMC. All I can say is, I don't know who to trust anymore. Fuji's went from TY to Prodisc, no name brand is safe anymore, damn them all.
Blah, blah, blah -
allz i know is the memorex 4x - r(cmc) worked fine for me. no bad burns. as far as i know its really not all that bad, perfect burns at 4x.
-
Memorex 4x +R are both made by Ricoh and CMC so be careful..
Usually, the spindle packs are invariably CMC, unless you get lucky. Some 25 spindles are Ricoh but anything higher is usually always CMC.
The individually pack discs or those that come in a 5 pack are usually always Ricoh.
Also, dont be scared of CMC. Agreed that CMC has not had a good track record, especially with their -R media, but their 4x CMC MAG-F01 dye is a different ballgame. I actually find no difference between it and Ricoh (except with ricoh i can burn faster). The new CMC dye is quite respectable, see the accounts on this site. Lots of users have been pleased with it (including me). -
Is this Richo or CMC? Is this CMC or RIcho? It is black base but has a thin ring. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000ET93T/ce/102-7429340-8892147?v=glan...#more-pictures

Did you read the above post?
I want to know whether or not the "current" "new" 100 DVD+R spindle is also Ricoh. -
Some people were saying that the inkjet printable ones were allways ricoh
but I never bought any. -
Just picked up a spindle of memorex dvd-r's at FutureShop, checked them in DVDInfoPro and its telling me these disc's are ProdiscS03.

Again, I think he was referring to DVD+R not -R.
For a 100 spindle, I'd say you would be damn lucky if you managed to pick up a Ricoh. Most 100 spindles are CMC.
One way to tell the difference was highlighted in a previous thread
Even though it was for TDK 4xDVD+R discs, it would apply here, as tdk also has 4x discs made by ricoh and CMC.
A brief summary (And I have verified it to be true as well):
1) The inner ring on the RICOH's are skinnier than CMC
2) There is a string of numbers/text on the inner ring of RICOH, but NOT CMC.
Other than that the appearances, colour of spindles or outer packaging is deceiving. I have heard that now even the UPC # are identical.
You can be certain (afaik) that the jewel-cased media is RICOH. With with spindles, its fair game (much more titled in CMC's favour).
That being said --> I have both the TDK and Memorex CMC and Ricoh discs. They have both worked equally well for me. I have no reason not to buy CMC again (only MAG F01 though for 4x DVD+R) especially if it is cheap. The only downside is that i can only burn the CMC's at 4x while the Ricoh;s can be burnt up to 8x (6x on my NEC ND-2500A).
Cheers. -
I recently bought two of these 100 piece spindles of Memorex DVD+R 4x Inkjet Printable from Amazon, and they are all RICOHJPN01. The identifiers as summarized by porphyra are also present on these discs. Make sure to get DVD+R and not DVD-R.

With all of what has been written about Memorex media not being as high of quality as other media, such as Ritek, I've been thinking seriously of re-selling my 2 unopened 50 packs of Memorex DVD+R 4x that I bought last week. However, it was stated:
1) The inner ring on the RICOH's are skinnier than CMC
2) There is a string of numbers/text on the inner ring of RICOH, but NOT CMC.
Anyone have a suggestion as to whether I should re-sell my Memorex media on eBay and buy some Ritek G04 discs instead? Just wondering if its worth the hassle. -
I'd say, keep your media. Another point that i didnt mention, but has also been observed is: The Ricoh media has 2 thin translucent plastic rings on top of the first disc as protection. The CMC has 2 white foamy rings which are thicker. Sometimes its hard to see, but other times if you tilt the spindle around it can been seen.
However, the only way you will know for certain is by opening the spindle and using DVDinfopro to read the media code.
The DVD+R CMC (MAG F01) is quite respectable media. It is widely held that this media is much better than their previous offerings, and if you have an NEC ND-2500A burner, this media is much better than Ritek. So open 1 spindle, and see what it is. It may be Ricoh, which is definately superior to Ritek.
Its not memorex discs, but who manufactures discs for them. They have 3-4 different manufacturers, so it really depends on which plant the discs have come from. -
I just received Memorex 100 DVD+R spindle from Amazon.com. And they are Ricoh!!! Mine has a rather thick ring arount outer area of the top which is different from the picture from Amazon.

So I ended up getting this great 100 spindle Ricoh-dyed Memorex printable for $85 shipped a few days after I ordered.
BTW the $85 deal only last 1 day and it went back to $99 although it is still a good deal if you happen to get the Ricoh. Fortunately I was able to get all 3 spindles dyed by Ricoh from Amazon. I might be extrememly lucky.
One thing that I still wonder is the reason why they sent a different-looking spindle from what they have in the site.
ANYWAY I'M EXTREMELY HAPPY!!! -

ok, just receive my 100pk spindle from amazon, they are indeed ricoh 4x, burn at 8x w/ liteon 851s gs0a mod firmware, run kprobe w/ extremly good result.
freaking amazon raise the price up to 99.99, the sale rank was at 1, and right after the raise the price, the sale rank jump up to 28.
can't wait till they lower their price back down again.TQ -
The Memorex Printables 100 Pack DVD+R 4X from Amazon are great.
The only problem I have with these (Ricohs) and I DONT THINK ANYONE SAYS THE PRINTABLES ARE NOT, is that the Printable surface is OK. It's nothing like the smooth satiny gloss of the Ritek G04 DVD-Rs.
But for $100 with free shipping and NO TAX, I got these two days after I ordered them.
I love G04s but with these I can burn 8.1X with NO READ ERRORS!!
