I'm looking for a firewire to RS232 converter, and can't seem to find anything. A few different google searches turned up nothing. The reason for the firewire to serial converter is I need the 12 volt supply from the firewire. If it wasn't for the 12 volt needs, I could use a USB to serial, as those are very common, but USB only supplies 5 volts (I think). So if anyone knows of a device, let me know.

Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

You could try here: CCT Online they might have something. I've never seen one though

If anybody know somthing about this, please tell me.
Thanks -
Nope, not yet.

if you grab the pinouts from a firewire cable can't you use that? i mean use a USB convertor alongside a firewire cable that is just providing power. or does it need to be a neat, one cable solution?

Might try email this site http://www.buyconverter.com/

I wanted a nice single connection package. What I guess I may have to do is use a USB to RS232 adaptor and get a DC-DC voltage doubler to get the power. I really only need 7.5 - 12 volts, the thing that might make it fail is I need 400 ma at that 12 volts. Lower the voltage and raise the current draw. Now I would be at the limits for USB (I think). I need to look up the USB specs and see how many watts I can draw from a typical USB 1.1 port. I assume I will need about 5 watts at 10 volts, which should turn into a 12 watt draw on the 5 volt USB port (some lost to the DC-DC converter), just a guess.
Edit, well that option is gone, max current for USB1.1 is 100ma per device.Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they? -
I hate to say it but I would just buy another monitor. Unless you're looking for a "can it be done" project. Have fun

It is actually a colorimeter used in concert with software to make printer ICM profiles. But as I said in the last post, it looks like a dead end. Very odd since both 1394 and RS232 are serial protocols, just that one is balanced and the other isn't.Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better...
