I have a DVD Video that unfortunately only had Chinese Subtitles but no English and I would like to make my own English translations assuming the Chinese Subtitles has the right "timing" done.

In my case, what would be the easiest way to do this? Is there a way to extract the chinese subtitles timing codes and enter my own text or whatever? It's probably obvious by now but this is my first time editing subtitles and don't have much clue.

Well, I've figured out the extracting part on my own using VobEdit... it is in .sup format... now could someone please tell me how I can edit this file with my own translations? I would greatly appreciate it.

If the subs are like srt in that they are text based with time codes for each entry then all you do is replace the chinese characters with the english text with hilight and paste mode.

Thanks for replying! They are .sup format and I think they are .BMP files and not text unfortunately... would I still be able to get the time codes though, because either way I still need to start the translations from scratch and only need the time codes and don't need the BMP since I don't know Chinese anyways.

Sorry but I don't understand how to use the Subrip. I click on the VOB icon and click 'Open IFO' and select the file and then click 'Start' but after that it shows the Chinese BMP and asks each Chinese character in blue (at times the dialog flashes in red) but I don't really understand from this point to change it to English.

I read this reply kind of late though because I went ahead and tried a different program called SRT2SUP instead and imported the .sup file and just clicked on each line and selected the "Is Text" bullet and replaced all the BMP with English translation (spent like 5+ hours translating, hopefully it didn't go to a waste). Was it okay for using this program or would Subrip been better? There were so many Subtitle Tools in the tools section I wasn't really sure which one to try out.

  7. I have used Subtitle Workshop and it is pretty good. You might want to try it.

^Have you checked this guide out? I think that's what you want. I found your post because I myself want to edit subtitles from a DVD. I'm luckier than you because I don't want them into another language, they're already in English, I just need to modify some of them.

Yeah, I read that guide. You should also check out http://www.dvd-guides.com/guides.php?category=subtitles&name=subtitleadd

    They helped me a lot.

I have 2 more questions though...

I used Subtitle Workshop (saved the subs as .srt), oh, great program by the way... but then when I convert it to .sup file with SRT2SUP then it won't turn out the way it looked in Subtitle Workshop.
I want to try to add subtitles in 2 seperate lines (such a scene where another person replies back right after so like for example:

(2 seperate lines, the way I want it to look.)
    Hey bob!
    Oh, hey.

But when I convert it to .sup then it becomes

(single line, I don't want it like this.)
    Hey bob! Oh, hey.

The 2nd problem, I started a new thread so check it out please.

  10. Hi,

If you go to global settings in Srt2Sup and uncheck [Auto Wrap Subtitles] you will find that subtitles will wrap at line breaks instead!

    Ohh! Thank you very much.

I'm guessing you are the creator of the program?

  12. Hi,

Your guess is correct and I am guessing you look as much like your photograph as I do mine!
