i know the standards for burning vcd's are: 352X240 size, 29.92 frame rate mpegs. burning speed 8X or less.

so what are the standards for mpeg to be converted to DVD's? how bout for the avi format? this is going to be my first time. any suggestion which dvd writer should i get? thanks!!

There is no standard for avi, its just a wrapper format. For basic DVD specs look here
