  1. Hello,

Have just bought and external Formac divideon superdrive (Toshiba SDR5112). I have a G3 700mhz imac with a cd drive and was told it would just be a simple plug in and go..but no! I am new to the innerworkings of mac's but have owned one for many years. My two main problems are that the apple dvd player will not recognise the drive and my burners will not recognise a blank disc. I also had to use Pacifist to install the dvd player from os10.2.8 and it wont open anyway! can sombody help me out please?

Dont know for certain but there might be a firmware updat for that toshiba drive that could help you out..

Sounds like you have done exactly what you need to do to make it work
You are using DVD-R disks right?

You might look at the user database at xlr8yourmac.com for information about other people's experience with that drive. I may be mistaken but it is my understanding that DVD Player doesn't work with external drives; you have to use VLC Media Player or other application instead. I'm assuming this drive is connected via firewire. How does it show up in Apple System Profiler?

External drives don't work with Apple DVD Player without a patch. However, this shouldn't prevent you from burning CDs.

Do you know where I can get this patch. I looked on Xlr8yourmac.com but they are not allowing new registration at the moment and couldn't find any info on it. I want to back my dvd collection and Backup 1.3 requires you to veiw each chapter doesn't it? Am new to backing up and having problem!

I don't think xlr8yourmac.com requires registration to search its database and read the various articles. If you are using System 10.3.x you can use Patchburn II (the download link is at xlr8yourmac.com). Also, LaCie has a patch for 10.3 on the optical drive support page.

For earlier versions of OS X you can have drive-specific patches. The easiest thing to do is search the xlr8yourmac.com CD/DVD drive user database for the model of external drive you want to patch.

By the way, Patchburn II has enabled my firewire Sony DVD +/- RW burner to mount discs playable with DVD Player, and to record from iTunes, iPhoto and the Finder in OS 10.3.2.
