  1. I am attempting to make DVDs of my old 8mm camcorder tapes. I was finally successful capturing video from my camcorder using VirtualVCR and saved it to a .avi file. Now what do I need to do to get it into a format such that I can use Nero 6 to burn a DVD of it? I’m brand new at this whole video capturing stuff and could really use some easy step by step instructions. Any and all help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

  2. You need to encode it to mpeg2, suggest tmpgenc for this, then author it, suggest DVDlab, then you can burn it. See the guides for convert and author on the left hand side of this page.

  3. Craig - I just downloaded tmpgenc and will give it a try. I also found the guide on how to use it. By the way, the guide says it will create a file that can be burnt to a DVD-R disk...can I use any media (DVD+R or DVD+RW), or will it only work to a -R? Also what do you mean by "authoring" with DVDlab, is that another mandatory step I need to do before burning a DVD with Nero or is it only if I want to add in titles or menus or something. This sure seems pretty complicated just to get video onto a DVD...is there a simpler method that I should be looking into? Thanks again.

    Hi bubernak,

These two threads will provide useful background reading. Not all will apply, or you may have to relate what others have done to what you're doing. But, in the end, it's all about getting an AVI and the steps to go through to get it looking good on a DVD disc.

Yes. Just be sure that that media is OK in your stand-alone DVD player. Testing on a re-writeable (+/-RW) is highly recommended.

Covered in the 2nd link above...

Not once you get used to it - trust me, I was recently where you are now, and now I'm happy with it all.

Common consensus (though not everyone's) is that it's best to use dedicated tools for each step - hence why Craig's various steps and various tools.

...is there a simpler method that I should be looking into?
Yep. Use an all-in-one application (don't ask me to name one, don't know / can't remember) that captures your DV cam footage, allows you to do some editing and menus/chapters, and then spits out an authored DVD. But, don't be surprised if you get quality issues...
