I ran into some earlier problems with stuttering occuring about 2/3 into a few of my movies, so in addition to other changes that I made, I also switched from Nero to Stomp RecordNow. However, in the last 3 movies that I've burned using this program, only 2 of the 3 will work on my Sony DVD player (and I tried one burning one of the movies 3 different times and my Sony wasn't able to read any of the copies). However, All 3 movies will work on my Toshiba DVD Player.

I decided to try CopytoDVD and all 3 movies worked perfectly on both my Toshiba and Sony DVD players. I was VERY surprised by what I found because I've read a ton of good reviews and comments about Stomp RecordNow. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had any similar problems using RecordNow - for some reason, Sony DVD players (AND I forgot to mention, my Dad's brand new expensive Sony DVD player wouldn't read it either) don't like movies burned via RecordNow.

I guess I'll just stick with CopytoDVD since the last 15 or so movies that I've burned have been perfect.

Thats cool but 99% of stuttering problems are media and not burn software.

  3. [All the following refers to STANDALONE players, not PC drives]
My brand spanking new Sony DVD player will "officially" play DVD+-R's/RW's (as it makes a point to state it on the player). My parent's 1 year old Sony DVD/Dream System stutters like crazy with most (but not all) DVD+R's but plays DVD-R's just fine. Meanwhile, my sister's very old Sony DVD player can handle DVD+R's just fine.

What it comes down to is the media AND the standard (+ or -). The "-R" discs are said to be more compatible, and from what I've seen, they are, but the +R's typically work on NEARLY as many standalone players. Burning with different software won't likely change your outcome, but sometimes burning at a SLOWER speed will improve your chances of getting a disc that would otherwise stutter to play smoothly (frankly, it's just not worth the trouble unless you want to watch an entire movie on every player you intend to watch it on; just switch to the media or standard (+/-) that WORKS).

I hear what you guys are saying, however I can tell you that in my case, BOTH of my Sony DVD players can't play 2 of the 3 movies that I just burned using Stomp RecordNow Max. And I'm not talking about stuttering here - just flat out not being able to recognize the disc. So regardless of what's said, for me, it's obvious (for what reason I have no idea) that RecordNow Max just doesn't do the job (that is, with my Sony DVD players). In comparison, CopytoDVD and Nero have never given me problems when it comes to being able to recognize a disc.

I was just wondering if anyone else had any similar experiences. What I am learning the more that I read on this forum and based on my own experiences, is that you need to take suggestions and advice but ultimately do what works for you. Since RecordNow doesn't work very consistently - and this isn't a media issue - then it's going into the trash. People can say what they want, but I haven't changed my media but instead, I've changed from Nero to CopytoDVD and no longer use labels, and I'm 26 for 27 in successfuly making copies (and the only bad copy came when I changed the speed from 4x to 2.0x). Every disc that I've burned since changing software has burned successfully.

  5. I used to use Nero and had similar compatability problems, as you are describing, with my Sony DVD-ROM.

Based on the many good things that were said on this site, I switched over to using RecordNow Max. Unfortunately, I had several issues with RNM creating coasters of my Ritek G04's (which are supposed to be pretty good media).

So I bit the bullet and purchased a 3rd app: Copy2DVD. Finally, this is the app that works for me. I have had NO problems with it whatsoever.

HOWEVER, those 2 other burning apps seem to be working fine for many other people... so what gives?

I guess as others have pointed out, you just have to fiddle until you find the right combination of burner/media/burning app that works for you and your system. Kinda sucks, but it seems to just be the way that it is.

    Good luck.

The moral is avoid Sony products. Cheap Asian DVD players can be had for <$50 which will play everything you throw at them, including RW's, mpegs, jpegs, and Pal discs.
