when using dvdxcopy platinum it compresses dual layer dvds and fits them onto one 4.7gb dvd-r. I have two questions relating to this.
1.When it compresses them do you lose quality?
2.If not is there any program that will compress large .avi files (2200mb),
that have been encoded into dvd, so that they will fit onto 4.7gb dvd-rs,
without losing quality?

Anytime you use compression, you are going to have some degree of loss in the quality of your output. The question really is how much. It all depends on the original file size and what program you are using. I haven't used platinum, so I can't comment on that particaular one. PInnacle Instant copy and dvdxcopy xpress work fine for me.
As far as an AVI that small, you should not have to compress at all. You only need to use an encoder, such as main concept, to convert the files into MPEG 2. And then use a DVD authoring program to convert the files to VOB's and burn.
