  1. Hi

I have a dvd burner and would like to back up some of my dvd's. The drive can not do a direct dvd to dvd copy as it can not right to the copyright part of the disc however is it possible just to copy the files from the dvd to the dvd-R without having to reencode them to mpeg2 using tmpgec etc??

    Any advice appreciated.

  2. No, you have to RIP the vob files off the disk using a DVD RIPPER, preferably SMARTRIPPER, rip in BACKUP mode, then you can simply burn the folders made back onto the DVD-R...2 notes:

    1) You will probably need to create a blank "Audio_ts" folder to burn on there as well.

    2) As complete DVDs are sometimes bigger in size than 4.7 GB (typical DVD-R size) then you can see it will not fit. So sometimes YES, reencoding the movie to a slightly lower bitrate may be neccessary OR, the other trade off is losing some the DVD extras to conserve space.
