Can anyone on here please help before I lose the rest of my hair.![]()
I have a Samsung SD 616 DVD Rom and a Pioneer 106 Writer.
I am using Win 98
I have Nero 6 latest version burning software.
The problem I have is with Nero and Disc Copy.
I have been copying DVD+RW discs onto DVD-R for a while using Disc Copy with no problems whatsoever, insert the disc's click Disc Copy and my drive flickered and the disc was read as a RW and the speed was changed to 2.4 or 1, a quick 'burn' press and 20 minutes later a copied disc.![]()
I then noticed that the Samsung was having problems reading a few disc's that the Pioneer could and it was making a grating noise when inserting any disc. So I disconnected the 3 leads on the drive, took it back to where I got it from and replaced it with EXACTLY the same make and model drive, came home and reconnected the 3 leads, booted up Nero and clicked on 'System Info' it found the drive no problem and also read the RW disc in the drive.
I went into Disc Copy but this time I couldn't get it to read the RW disc and the only burning options were 4,2,1 speed and it just wouldn't acknowledge a RW disc at all. It knows there is a RW disc in there, as I can go to Data disk new compilation and drag the files across, and as I said system info reads the disc and whats on it no problem.
I used the Nero clean up tool to uninstall Nero and downloaded it again, inserted the code to activate the program and let it find the drives again, EXACTLY the same problem!! Every application apart from Disc Copy works perfectly, even disc copy with DVD-R to DVD-R, or CD RW to CDR works fine, it's just DVD RW it will not read at all.![]()
I printed out the error log and I noticed one part of the log had the following 'Check Supported media : disabled (0)'
Not sure if that is the problem and can find no way to enable it anyhow.
There must be at least one person who has had the same problem out there so please please please help........many thanks Rob

Have you updated to the latest firmware on your drives?
Have you tried reading/saving to disc with the Pioneer, then burning with the Pioneer? Are all these RW's the same brand? Maybe the Samsung is history. -
Thanks for the reply Mystic
The firmware should be the same I would have thought, although since I uninstalled Nero completly I don't know how it hasn't just read the drive as a new drive it hasn't seen before etc, as I have already mentioned it knows there is a RW disc in the drive when doing everything else apart from Disc copy.
I haven't tried the Pioneer to read and burn yet as the whole point of Nero Disc copy is to do a straight copy on the fly so to speak without having to resort to the HD and taking twice as long.
The Samsung works perfectly all right and I can watch and read from all the RW disc's (differant brands) I throw at it.
Nero have been nothing short of useless in this matter and don't seem to be able to comprehend what question's I asked them (politely).
1, What would make Disc Copy not read DVDRW all of a sudden
2, How do you 'enable' check supported media which is currently 'disabled'
Really cheesed off with this now....Next step will be another re install and disconnect both drives and start that way.
Any other suggestions will be greatly recieved. -
Decided to give it a shot. Loaded up an RW in my reader and a blank RW in my burner. Opened Nero Burning Rom to make a direct DVD copy. I experienced the same thing, it saw the discs and drives but the burn button was grayed out. I then went to Nero Express and chose Copy on the fly and it all went well. I then put the new RW copy in my reader to check it, it played fine. I then went back to Burning Rom, and this time Nero recognized all, the Burn button was active and I was now able to burn/copy the disc. It's almost as though the Nero "learned" something from the Nero Express burn.
For what it's worth... -
Hi Mystic
No luck
Went into Nero Express (no option to copy on the fly in here, only in the normal burning Rom which I have ticked )
Checked all the source drives etc were properly set up then clicked on 'burn'
This was the error message recieved 'Sorry your compilation cannot be written on this kind of disc. Please insert a disc of the correct type or modify the settings of your compliation to make it compatible with the current media'
Now two things puzzle me, what does it mean by saying the compilation cannot be written on this type of disc? the disc in the recorder is a bog standard Grade A DVD-R disc, how do you modify the settings of your compilation so that a bog standard -R disc will be written to, also when doing a Disc Copy the problem seems to be with the fact it wont read the RW and nothing to do with the blanlk disc in the Pioneer??
As I said Nero Express wont even burn the disc, next step will be to see if it will read the disc and copy to HD. -
Went into Nero Express (no option to copy on the fly in here
-
yes Mystic that was there and both my drives were there as well, both the source and destination drive were in the correct boxes. BUT I may have found something out.
As I said in Nero system info it reads my Samsung source drive no problem and reads the RW disc I had in BUT....
When in Nero Express I tried to use the Nero Image drive and it said that the Samsung was not detected and I needed to let Nero Auto detect the drive? even though in System Info it has already found it, I am beginning to think it is more than likely this could be the problem, BUT in Burning Rom and 'Extras' at the top the option to 'Auto Detect a CD/DVD drive' is greyed out sooooo...........next question How do I get it to be not greyed out and auto detect what in other parts of the program it has already detected. -
I give up
Just read the nero manual and it says Auto Detect is only available if Nero hasn't detected your drives, so it's greyed out because it has detected my drives, so why is it saying that the Samsung hasn't been detected in some parts of the program.
