  2. Garbage in, garbage out.

Sure, TMPG's MPEG-1 Layer 2 audio encoder isn't the best, but I've never seen a good quality ASF, so I don't think that's the issue.

  3. Uh huh, hateslife is correct. ASF is nuthing more than a bunch of garbage, its the ugliest video compression method out there, and is meant for POV"s who want to transfer video on 14.4 modems. You cant throw in an ugly arse ASF file and expect it to come out DVD quality

  4. Yeshi, you do realise of course that ASF used the SAME video compression as the older hacked version of DivX?

  5. i assume you mean an asf file with ms mpeg-4 v3 video. just remember that asf files can contain any audio or video codec, they're just like avi files in that respect. but it's just like wav files, 99% of wav files are uncompressed linear pcm (even though anything could be used), 99% of asf files are ms mpeg-4 v3.

on those files you can increase the quality a bit by going to the view menu in windows media player 6.4 and going to settings/ms mpeg-4 video decompressor. set the picture quality to the highest setting (4). this will remove some of the blockiness.

unfortunately, most asf files are badly encoded at low bitrates. if encoded properly and at high bitrates, the files can be quite good. of course, screw anything micro$oft. i just like using asfrecorder or streambox vcr to save the streams from music video sites.

  6. most navi's and asfs out there get made at low bitrates.. (400- kb/s at 320x240ishat 15-20 fps) basically giving mpeg4 a bad rap. im not sure why all of sudden divx comes out and every one starts making them at 900 kb/s at full frame rates and lots of times at high resolutions .. asfs(mpeg4 ones) and navis at 704x480x900kb/s look pretty much the same as a divx of the same size and rate(variables are the implementation of the codec)

  7. hmmm...I thought fei was asking about the audio quality??
Personally I don't think the video is too bad after the conversion. But I do experience audio problem, on and off throughout the movie, the same problem he had, i suppose.
I guess I'll have to convert the audio into wav first using Virtual Dub, or is there anything better?

  8. haha, thanx guys, but i was only askin bout the audio. the audio in the original asf vid is pretty good, but when i used TMPEG 12.a to convert the audio, it came out all crappy. what i wanted to know was y using TMPEG to convert gave me a crappy output audio when the original source was good

  9. Try to convert the audio to wav. file first, then use TMPEG to load it up. It works fine for me. Like the Vidkid says, the system probablly can't handle both video and audio at the same time. You'll need another 1000 Mb for the audio file, full processing, but the quality will be fine. It took me about 10 min. to convert it to wav. Good Luck!

  10. I think it may be that when encoding asf's the audio is not consistantly muxed on purpose... i have always had to strip the audio out to wav with other software before converting to mpg.. but as many have said it is a bit of a waste if you want the video as well because it is at such a low bitrate it comes out slushy.
